Lidl seeks approval to build in Austintown

CORRECTED FOR THE APRIL 27 HEARING

Staff report

AUSTINTOWN

A Lidl grocery store could be coming to the corner of Mahoning Avenue and Wilcox Road.

The company is seeking to have two parcels of property rezoned for business development.

Currently, the parcels are zoned for business development for 150 feet from Mahoning Avenue, with the remainder zoned for residential development.

The development would occupy a third parcel at the corner of Mahoning and Wilcox that is already zoned for business development.

Lidl is a German-based company that runs discount supermarkets and is considered a competitor of Aldi. The proposed Austintown store would be about 36,000 square feet.

One of the parcels the company seeks to rezone is currently the site of the Pink Elephant bar, which has been in Austintown since 1967. The plans show the bar would be demolished.

The Austintown Township Zoning Commission will have a public hearing at 6 p.m. April 27 at the township building on Ohltown Road.
