YSU basketball gets three commitments

The Youngstown State men’s basketball team picked up verbal commitments from three players as part of Jerrod Calhoun’s first class as head coach of the Penguins.

Naz Bohannon, (6-5, Lorain), Jacob Brown (6-8, Forest Trail Academy) and Garrett Covington (6-5, Don Bosco Prep) all intend to sign with YSU.

Bohannon was named to the Associated Press’ first-team All-Ohio. He had basketball offers from Drexel and Kent State, Indiana, State, Brown and New Mexico. Football offers included Michigan State, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.

Fitch softball player McKenzie Luknis hit two three-run homers in Monday’s game against Poland. She also doubled and finished with six RBIs. A story in Tuesday’s edition incorrectly said she hit a two-run homer.

Eastwood to honor Kennedy Catholic

The Kennedy Catholic High School boys basketball will be honored at a ceremony today at 1 p.m. at the Eastwood Mall.

Kennedy Catholic recently defended its PIAA Class A championship with a 73-56 win over Girard College.

Among those attending the ceremony will be Youngstown State University President James Tressel and men’s basketball coach Jerrod Calhoun.

The Cafaro Foundation will present a $10,000 donation to the Hermitage, Pa., high school.

Sharon Speedway has races on Friday

The 88th anniversary season at Sharon Speedway is set to begin this Friday.

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) will make its inaugural appearance at the 3/8-mile clay oval. The Summit Racing Equipment Econo Mods also will be on the card with warm-ups slated to begin at 6:15 p.m.

The LOLMDS boasts a star-studded lineup of racers that will be in competition battling in the $10,000 to-win “Steel Valley 50” led by defending three-time Series champion and current point leader Scott Bloomquist.

Josh Richards, four-time World of Outlaws champion, has has moved over to the LOLMDS in 2017. He trails Bloomquist by 120 points.

Traffic advisory set for Mahoning meet

The 104th High School Mahoning County Track and Field Championships will be Saturday at Falcon Stadium with field events getting under way at 9 a.m. and running Events at 10 a.m.

Due to events scheduled on the West Side of Austintown’s campus, fans attending the meet must enter the campus from either Burkey or Raccoon roads.

Officials, athletes, coaches and team buses must enter off Raccoon Road by the Austintown branch of the Mahoning County Library.

Mill Creek Course adds junior tees

YOUNGSTOWN

The North and South Mill Creek Golf Courses will display two new sets of tee markers designated specifically for junior golfers ages 5 to 13 years old.

There will be a pink set of tees for girls and a light blue set of tees for boys. Both sets of tee markers will be set up for a shorter distance to make the game more enjoyable and playtime quicker. The tee markers will align to similar distances as in the national PGA Junior Golf League program and the PGA of America’s Tee it Forward initiative.

Also new is the Donald Ross Mill Creek Kids Club. Children joining who play 10-or-more rounds will receive a free Donald Ross Mill Creek Kids Club bag tag, sleeve of golf balls and a free large bucket of range balls.

Also, after a round of golf, players ages 5 to 13 who bring a completed scorecard stamped by a Mill Creek staff member into Mill Creek Hole #55 Grille will receive a free bag of popcorn.

Children may register for the club in the Mill Creek Golf Shop.
