BASEBALL

Penguins top Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE, WIS.

Nico Padovan hit a game-tying single in the ninth, and the Youngstown State baseball team scored on an error in the 10th to rally for a 6-5 win at Milwaukee on Saturday at Henry Aaron Field.

Padovan and Anthony Rohan both had a pair of hits to lead YSU.

The Penguins salvaged a game in the three-game series and entered into a three-way tie for fourth place in the Horizon League standings. YSU is now 5-10 in conference play and matched last year’s total for league victories.

YSU reliever Joe King worked around a two-base error to start Milwaukee’s ninth inning, and he stranded the bases loaded in the 10th to earn the victory.

TRACK AND FIELD

YSU teams in three meets

The Youngstown State track and field team had a busy two days with members of the team competing in three different meets across the country.

On Friday and Saturday, nearly 20 members were in action at the Mt. SAC Relays in California while others competed at the Northeast Ohio Quad and the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic.

MT. SAC RELAYS RECAP

Jaynee Corbett had third-place performance in the shot put with a throw of 15.17m while finishing sixth in the discus with a best throw of 46.22m. Ryan Booth had a throw of 46.77m in the discus.

In the women’s sprint events, Jaliyah Elliott had a time of 11.86 seconds in the 100m dash while Taylor Thompkins clocked a time of 12.19 seconds in the 100m as well. In the hurdles, Amber Eles ran a time of 14.71 seconds in the 100m hurdles and Taylor McDonald had a 1:01.11 to place eighth in the 400m hurdles.

In the high jump, Abby Jones was sixth clearing a height of 1.68m and Chenera Lacey was eighth at 1.63m.

In the men’s sprint events, Carl Zallow ran a time of 10.80 seconds in the 100m dash. Freshman Collin Harden ran a time of 54.65 seconds in the 400m hurdles.

BUCKNELL RECAP

Late Friday at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic, freshman Ryan Roush broke the YSU 10.000m school record running a time of 29:34.12. Roush eclipsed the previous standard of 30:00.99 set by Ryan Sullivan last year.

Other Penguins who were in action at Bucknell were Melissa Klim who ran a 19:44.14 in the 5,000m, Suzanne Koziol who ran an 11:50.75 in the steeplechase Libby Rogenski who clocked a 12:21.19 in the steeplechase, Dylan Dombi had a time of 30:56.74 in the 10,000m and Mike Dahman ran a 33:46.13 in the 10,000m.

NORTHEAST OHIO QUAD RECAP

Brendon Lucas and Kesihawnna Burts won events to lead the Penguins.

Burts won the 400m with a time of 56.22 seconds and was second in the 200m with a time of 24.03 seconds.

Ellie Pollock placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 11.50m. Angela Lock was third in the javelin with a throw of 33.37m.

Lucas won the 200m dash with a time of 21.19 seconds while also finishing fourth in the 400m with a time of 48.85 seconds.

Tim Holzapfel ran a career-best time of 14.36 seconds to place second in the 110 hurdles. Jacob Wison had a second-place throw in the javelin with a toss of 58.29m.

MEN’S TENNIS

YSU sets mark with 16th win

BOARDMAN

The Youngstown State men’s tennis team used a solid performance from start to finish to claim a 6-1 win over Cleveland State on Saturday afternoon. The Penguins set a school record with their 16th dual win this spring.

The Penguins (16-7 and 4-2) won the doubles point winning two of three matches then won five singles tilts against the Vikings (8-14 and 2-4).

In doubles, YSU won matches at No. 1 and No. 2 to earn the point to offset a CSU win at No. 3.

At No. 2, Danylo Veremeichuk and Joao Garretto won 6-2 and at No. 1, Mitch Maroscher and Thomas Rodrigues earned a 7-5 win to clinch the point.

In singles play, Maroscher won 6-4, 6-3 over Nico Mosturdi at No. 1. It was the final home contest for Maroscher, who transferred to YSU this year from Grand Canyon. Marsocher improved to 19-10 and 15-5 in dual play.

Veremeichuk earned a 6-2, 7-6 win over Colton Buffington at No. 2. At No. 3, Rodrigues beat Ben Slade 6-4, 6-1. In action at No. 4, Garretto cruised to an impressive 6-3, 6-0 victory. At No. 5, Luke Purser earned a come-from-behind victory over Kevin Goth. After dropping the first set 6-3, Purser won the remaining two 7-6 and 11-9.

MEN’S GOLF

Sveda notches top-20 finish

MUNCIE, IND.

Senior Steven Sveda finished in the top 20 to lead YSU at the Earl Yestingmeier Memorial Invitational, which concluded Saturday.

Sveda finished 18th with a three-round total of 221. He had rounds of 72, 74 and 75 during the event. He recorded five birdies during the tournament.

The Penguins placed 12th out of 13 teams with a three-round total of 1,153 (388-379-386). Winning the event was Ball State by one shot over Eastern Kentucky.
