Benefit run for dogs

The fourth annual Walk 2 Adopt color walk/run to benefit the Trumbull County Dog Kennel will begin at 12:30 p.m. May 6 at the kennel, 7501 Anderson Ave. The trail loops through Howland Township Park. Registration begins at noon. The cost is $15 for an individual and $12 for a team of four or more.

All proceeds will go to supplies and veterinary care. Free shirts and sunglasses are included with early registration. For information contact Tiana Anthony at 330-240-3680.

Paper-shredding event Saturday

POLAND

A paper-shredding event will be from 9 a.m. to noon April 22 at Shepherd of the Valley, 301 W. Western Reserve Road.

The public is invited to bring up to five banker’s boxes of paper for shredding, the Mahoning County Recycling Division has announced.

Staples, paper clips, spiral notebooks and rubber bands are acceptable for shredding.

No plastic, plastic bags, cardboard, three-ring binders, vinyl, metal or media, such as CDs, DVDs and videotapes, will be accepted.

It’s a girl, thanks to Sharon cops’ assist

SHARON, PA.

Mother and baby are doing fine two days after Sharon policemen Geoffrey Ballard and Steven Winans helped a Sharon woman deliver her daughter.

Police were dispatched at 9:11 p.m. Friday on a medical assist call in the 200 block of Quinby Street. Officers Ballard and Winans arrived before the ambulance and found the mother-soon-to-be sitting on a couch having contractions, said Sharon Police Chief Gerald Smith.

Nevertheless, Ballard, also an emergency medical technician, believed there was time to get the mother to the hospital. But immediately, her water broke and within three minutes, with Ballard’s help, the baby was born, Smith said. Mother and child were transported to UPMC Horizon in Farrell, Pa.

Ballard has been on the force for 11 years and is trained as an EMT, Smith said.

Screening of ‘Traficant’ at Tyler

The Mahoning Valley Historical Society, along with special guest filmmaker Eric Murphy, will present a special screening of Murphy’s documentary “Traficant: The Congressman of Crimetown” at 2 p.m. April 30 at Tyler History Center, 325 W. Federal St. The cost for the screening is $5 for MVHS members and $7 for the general public. Free adjacent parking is available. Tickets will be sold at the door.
