Penguins win Pine Hills Shootout

HINCKLEY

The Youngstown State women’s golf team had a strong performance in its final contest before the upcoming Horizon League Championships winning a three-team event on Friday at the Pine Hills Golf Course in Hinckley, Ohio.

The Penguins posted a score of 310 to defeat Bowling Green which carded a 317 and Cleveland State which finished with a 326.

Freshman Reva Morris continued her outstanding freshman season with a low round of 72 (even par) to take medalist honors. It was her ninth top-10 finish in 10 events this year.

Placing second was Christina Cooper who carded a 76. Finishing sixth was senior Mia Barchetti with a round of 80. Junior Courtney Shutt was eighth with an 82. Haleigh Guerrero shot an 84 to place 12th while Megan Creager finished 16th.

Sveda tied for 22nd in Yestingsmeier event

MUNCIE, IND.

Steven Sveda was YSU’s top player on Friday in the Earl Yestingsmeier Memorial Invitational Friday at Delaware Country Club in Muncie, Ind.

Sveda shot rounds of 72 and 74 for a 146 and a tie for 22nd place among individuals.

The Penguins’ other players were Thomas Lydic (77-74—151, tied for 49th) , Jason McQuown (76-76—152, tied for 53rd), Evan Standohar (82-76—158, tied for 71st), Jacob Harrah (81-80—161, tied for 80th) and Justin Hallapy (84-79—163, 85th).

Eastern Kentucky’s Noah Combs (69-67—136) and Taylor Alex Dutkowski (66-70—136) are tied for the lead.

Eastern Kentucky (358-356—714) has a six-stroke lead over second-place Ball State (362-358—720) in the team standings. YSU (388-379—767) and Loyola-Chicago (382-385—767) are tied for 12th.

Milwaukee’s Peters shuts down Penguins

MILWAUKEE, WIS.

Milwaukee’s Jay Peters pitched seven innings of shutout relief, and Milwaukee mustered just enough offense to beat the Youngstown State baseball team 3-0 on Saturday at Henry Aaron Field.

Peters came on to start the top of the third to relieve injured Panthers starter Elijah Goodman, and the pair held the Penguins to two singles in the shutout. They outdueled YSU’s Collin Floyd, who struck out eight while surrendering just six hits and one walk.

The game was scoreless until there were two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning when Milwaukee catcher Daulton Varsho hit a two-run double with the bases loaded. The Panthers added a run on a bunt single by Chris Kelly with two outs in the eighth.

Trey Bridis’ two-out double in the top of the fifth accounted for Youngstown State’s first base runner of the game. Floyd had allowed just one hit and had faced the minimum up to that point before yielding a double, a walk and an infield single prior to Varsho’s run-scoring double.

Anthony Rohan led off the top of the seventh with an infield hit, but he was thrown out a third two batters later on a fielder’s choice. YSU had a batter walk in the both the eighth and ninth innings but did not get a runner in to scoring position either time.

YSU and Milwaukee will conclude the series at 1 p.m. today.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

YSU hosts home finale against CSU tonight

The YSU women’s tennis team plays host to first-place Cleveland State in a key Horizon League contest on Saturday night at the Boardman Tennis Center. The contest is the final home match for seniors Nehel Sahni and Dominika Lackova.

First serve for the clash between teams with a combined 11-1 Horizon League record is set for approximately 6 p.m.

The Penguins (11-8 and 5-1) have won five straight league matches and are a match back of the Vikings (12-8 and 6-0). Each team has three league matches remaining. Next weekend the pair head to Wisconsin for duals against Milwaukee and Green Bay.

Sahni and Lackova joined the program at the same time in January 2013 from halfway across the world. The pair have combined for 107 career singles victories during their careers. They have been part of three Horizon League Tournament Championship teams, three NCAA Regional teams and one conference regular-season champion.

Sahni owns a career record of 56-41 and is 46-27 in dual matches. She ranks sixth in school history in career victories and owns the school career record with 26 wins at No. 5 singles.

Lackova owns a career mark of 61-50 and is 47-29 in dual matches. She ranks fourth in school history in career victories.

MEN’S TENNIS

Penguins host Vikings today at Boardman

BOARDMAN

The YSU men’s tennis team plays host to Cleveland State at 3 p.m. today at the Boardman Tennis Center. It is the final home contest for the Penguins.

The Penguins are 15-7 overall record and 3-2 in the Horizon League. The Vikings are 8-13 and 2-3.

YSU senior Mitch Maroscher is 18-10 this year, including a dual record of 14-5. Marsosher, a native of nearby Salem, attended Scottsdale Community College and Grand Canyon University before joining YSU as a graduate transfer.
