COLUMBUS

State Rep. John Boccieri of Poland, D-59th, urges adoption of his budget amendment to connect Northeast Ohio research universities and military installations to job growth initiatives.

Current language in House Bill 49 limits Ohio Federal Research Network funding to Ohio State University in partnership with Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, NASA Glenn Research Facility, Ohio’s research universities and the private sector. The amendment explicitly states Youngstown State University, Kent State University, the Youngstown-Warren Air Reserve Station and Camp Ravenna qualify for funding.

Quarter auction

AUSTINTOWN

Austintown Growth Foundation will host a quarter auction beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday at the Saxon Club, 710 S. Meridian Road. Admission is $5 per person and/or $40 per table of 8. Pop and pizza will be provided. Attendees are asked to bring their own snacks. Proceeds go to help with scholarships for Austintown Fitch seniors. Road closing

JOHNSTON

Effective Monday, Ridge Road between Bradley Brownlee Road and state Route 5 will be closed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. due to culvert replacement. The recommended detour route is west on Bradley Brownlee Road and northeast on Route 5.

Minutes with mayor

YOUNGSTOWN

This month’s “Five Minutes with the Mayor” will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the pavilion at the Arlington Heights Rec Center, 801 Park Ave.

Mayor John A. McNally will listen to any concerns citizens may have regarding issues in the city.

1 injured in crash

WARREN

A woman suffered minor injuries when she was struck by a car in the parking lot of the Citi Trends store on Elm Road at 3 p.m. Thursday by a person fleeing after stealing from the store. Police said a store employee reported seeing a woman putting $50 worth of items in her purse and moving toward the door. The employee took pictures of the suspect and called 911.

The suspect saw the employee taking pictures and got in her vehicle and headed out of the parking lot. The victim, 24, of Warren, was walking toward her car with her two children when she was struck by the car, which then continued out of the parking lot and onto Elm Road. The victim declined medical attention.

Assault reported

WARREN

A woman, 28, who is a patient of a Warren nursing home, was assaulted at about 7 p.m. Wednesday by three women in front of a gas station on North Park Avenue.

The call came from the nursing home on Thursday, but there was no explanation in the report why the victim had gone to North Park Avenue.

The victim said the women choked her, causing her to lose consciousness 10 to 12 times. The victim had visible abrasions and dark bruises around her neck consistent with strangulation, police said.
