Woman stabbed, struck with padlock in Warren grocery store

Staff report

WARREN

Two people were jailed on felonious assault charges after a fight at inside the Save A Lot store on North Park Avenue on Friday afternoon that resulted in a woman being stabbed in the head and hit in the head with a padlock on a keychain.

The fight produced a commotion in the store, with a man throwing large glass jars at another man.

The victim, 33, of Ogden Avenue Northwest, suffered a minor injury and refused medical attention.

Police viewed surveillance video of the 12:45 p.m. incident and charged Mandi M. Hopkins, 40, and Derrian E. Reed, 47, both of Stewart Drive Northwest, with felonious assault. They are likely to be arraigned in Warren Municipal Court Monday.

If convicted, they could get an eight-year prison sentence.

Another of the people involved in the fight, Ronald R. Butler, 21, of Jefferson Street Southwest, was charged with disorderly conduct for refusing to cooperate with police while they were investigating the matter. He also was booked into the jail.

Police said the fight began when Hopkins pushed the victim during an argument dating back to last summer. At the same time, Reed swung a pocket knife at Butler, who was throwing things at Reed. Butler said the victim is his girlfriend.

Reed also went over to the victim while she was fighting Hopkins and swung a knife upward and apparently stabbed the victim in the forehead with it, a report states.

The video also showed Hopkins swinging a keychain with a padlock on it at the victim, hitting her in the head.

Police recovered the padlock with blood on it.
