Dobbins third- and fourth-grade students went skating on March 14 at Youngstown Skate as a reward for completing 145,579 minutes worth of reading during their Read-a-Thon.

Youngstown Skate is one of the sponsors of the Read-a-Thon so they closed the rink to the public to allow the Dobbins students to skate and play with their friends and families. The students knew about the skate party beforehand to give them motivation to read and complete their Read-a-Thon goal.

Last year’s students were also given the opportunity to go skating as a reward for their reading efforts. The Read-a-Thon is a PTO event that helps with fundraising for the school and students and works to engage both students and their families.

“We get great participation,” said PTO member Kristin Masucci.

Many of the students bring their siblings to skate with them, and some of the parents get on the floor to skate with their children.

The Dobbins PTO works to organize different rewards to give the students for the hard work they put in throughout the school year. The money raised from events like the Read-a-Thon allow the PTO to put together programs for the Dobbins students to participate in, activities like skating, along with field trips, family events and school supplies.
