Seniors group to meet

The Holy Family Seniors Group will meet on April 17 at 11:30 a.m. in Holy Family Parish Hall, located at 2729 Center Road in Poland. Hostesses for this Easter-themed meeting will be Jan Stamp, Pat Kasaris and Gert Baldwin. Lunch will be served at noon, followed by Bingo and card games. Members are reminded that the 2017 membership dues are due. New members are also invited to join at this time. Men and women ages 55 and older, living in nearby communities are invited to join the group. The cost of the annual membership is $10 for current and new members. Historical Society to meet

The Poland Historical Society will host its next regular meeting on April 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road (Route 224 and Struthers Road intersection) in Poland Township. The program at 7:30 p.m., titled “Tales from the Graveyard II,” will be presented by Dave Smith. It is a sequel to the original presentation of the stories of some of Poland’s earliest settlers, buried in the graveyard adjoining the Poland Presbyterian Church. The stories of fourteen additional persons will be told, including many who died from unnatural causes, such as drownings, train accidents, Civil War casualties and more.

Transition fair and forum to be at MCCTC

Are you ready to learn more about post-secondary options and employment services for students with disabilities? Attend the Transition Fair and Forum on April 26 from 5-7 p.m. in the Joyce Brooks Center at MCCTC. An eventful evening is planned with more than 25 exhibitors on site from a range of programs, as well as support for students with disabilities, families and educators. This event will showcase training programs, resources and community agencies that facilitate the transition of youth with special needs to community/employment. Breakout sessions include Youngstown State university Disability Services and OhioMeansJobs. Students, families and educators are invited to learn their options, become informed and ask questions. Local church to have rummage sale

Struthers Parkside Church will be hosting a rummage sale on April 22 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at 110 Poland Ave. in Struthers. There will be a variety of items such as toys, books, household items, holiday decor and more. Specialty items will also be on sale. Lunch will be sold, as well as baked goods. There will be a basket raffle. Drawings will take place at the end of the sale. You need not be present. Proceeds from the sale will be used for repairs and missions.

Easter Brunch at Fellows

Mill Creek MetroParks will host an Easter Brunch at Fellows Riverside Gardens, catered by Inspired Catering by Kravitz. The brunch will take place on April 16 and there will be two seatings, one at 11 a.m. and the other at 2 p.m. The cost is $28 for adults, $15 for children ages 12 and under and free for children under the age of 4. Prices include sales tax and gratuity. Reservations are required and can be made by calling Kravitz’s Garden Cafe at 330-779-8201.

Victorian Players to present “Twelfth Night”

The Victorian Players will present Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” on April 15, 21, 22 and 23, directed by Amy Anne Kibler. The Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m.; the Sunday matinee is at 2 p.m. There is NO performance on Easter Sunday. Tickets are $13 for adults, $10 for students and senior citizens, and tickets can be purchased at the door. The box office opens one hour prior to curtain. For reservations, call 330-746-5455.

Diabetes education classes to be April 18-20

There will be classes on diabetes self-management education on April 18-20 from 6-8:30 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital’s Azalea Room. The hospital is located at 8401 Market Street on Boardman. Self-Management Education (DSME) sessions will help you learn how to improve your health by taking charge of your diabetes. Sessions include topics such as what diabetes is, diabetes medicines, monitoring your blood glucose, benefits of exercise, diet and customized meal planning. A class session includes a series of three classes in a row on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Sessions are offered weekly, 2 1/2-3 hours each day in the morning or evening at the three hospitals (see class schedule for specific time and place). They are taught by a Registered Nurse Diabetes Educator and Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) Diabetes Educator. A doctor referral is needed to enroll. Victorian Players sponsors trip to Playhouse Square

The Victorian Players Theatre, Inc. is sponsoring a bus trip to Playhouse Square in Cleveland on May 13. They will see a matinee performance of “Something Rotten.” The bus will depart the theatre, located at 702 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown, at 11 a.m. A boxed lunch will be provided. Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for April 17

The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be April 17 from 6-8 p.m. in the small meeting room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, located at 43 W Main St. in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Newcomers of Mahoning Valley to meet on April 26

Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will have their luncheon meeting for this month on April 26 at Nicolinni’s in Boardman at 11:30 a.m. The program will be a speaker from the School of Potential Development, a discussion on autism. They will also be electing officers for next year. Other activities happening this month will be the movie and lunch group on April 19 and needlework on April 11. The book club will be discussing “A Man Called Ova” by Fredrik Backman on April 27. Members will be calling others on updates on Roundtowners and the birthday group. Newcomers welcomes anyone who is looking to learn more about the community and interested in forming new friendships, especially anyone who has had a change in their life and would like to try something new. Cardinal Mooney High School announces 14th annual “Celebrate Mooney” auction

Cardinal Mooney High School has set the date for its 14th annual fundraising Auction as April 29. The largest fundraising event of the year will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St, in Youngstown, from 5:30-11 p.m. Cocktails and a silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are available by calling the school at 330-788-5007 or online through the Auction link on www.cardinalmooney.com Individual tickets are $75, which include dinner and open bar. RSVP by April 15. This year’s theme is “Celebrate Mooney: Embracing Our Past, Highlighting Our Present, and Building a Bright Future.” As part of the celebration, Mooney will be honoring Diane Mastro Nard, Honorary Chairwoman and former CMHS teacher and Speech Coach. Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Poland library on April 27 at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate stories and activities that will help your child learn about money. Each child will receive a piggy bank. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Shakespeare day

Celebrate the birthday of William Shakespeare while learning about the famous bard at the Poland library on April 26 at 9 a.m. This event includes displays and hands-on activities. It promises to be fun for all ages.

Bonding with babies and books and signs, oh my

Come to the Poland library on April 26 at 10 a.m. and learn how to use American Sign Language (ASL) with your child through rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Learn easy corresponding signs to learn and share with your little ones.

Trim a tree for April

Decorate an ornament for the all-seasons tree at the Poland library during library hours in April. This craft is for children of all ages.

Read to Roxie

Relax and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International at the Poland library on April 19 at 6 p.m. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This is for children in grades 1-4.

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Poland library on April 18 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This is for children, ages 6 and up.

Marvel movie madness

Help the Poland library celebrate the release of “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2” on April 29 at 11 a.m. You’ll watch clips and trailers, have snacks, crafts and trivia. This event is for teens age 13 and up.

Get connected with digital media

Would you like to learn how to download free eBooks, audiobooks, movies, TV shows, music, complete issues of magazines and more to your computer and mobile devices? Come to the Poland library on April 22 at 10 a.m. This event is for adults.

Library closings

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on April 15 and 16.

Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. This location is handicapped accessible. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard. This location is handicapped accessible. On Wednesdays, a meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Valley Care - Northside Medical Center in the Medical Education Building, auditorium A, located at 500 Gypsy Lane in Youngstown. This location is handicapped accessible. On Thursdays at 6 p.m., a meeting will take place in Faith Chapel Fellowship Church, located at 511 E. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be July 17

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Lions host Treasures of the Trunk Sale

The Poland Lions will host a “Treasures of the Trunk Sale” to benefit the Poland Lions Scholarship and Community Funds on June 10 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Poland High School stadium parking lot. The Lions are currently looking for venders for the one-day sale, including crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and venders with garage sale items. There is a limit of 100 spaces, so reserve your space early. Registration is $10 per one parking space prior to May 1. After May 1, the cost is $15 per space. Venders must bring their own tables. Yoga class

Friends of PLYMC is sponsoring a Yoga Class every Wednesday in the Poland library meeting room from 5-6 p.m. Pay as you attend at $10 per session.
