Local church to host drive through dinner

Drive through chicken dinners will be offered at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, on April 27 from 3-6 p.m. They will consist of chicken parmesan, spaghetti, three bean salad, roll and butter, and cake. The cost is $9 per dinner (cash only), and the proceeds will help with ministry expenses. Each customer will get $1 off the purchase price if they bring a can of vegetables that will be donated to the needy via the Rescue Mission or some other worthwhile organization. CUMC hosts program on living with grief

Each year the Hospice Foundation of America (HFA) presents a nationally recognized distance learning program to more than 125,000 people in 2,000 communities. The information provided by the expert panel will be useful to health care clinicians, social service clinicians and others working in the hospice, palliative care, counseling, hospital, nursing home, funeral home or faith community environments. This year’s Living With Grief Æ Program focuses on “When Grief is Complicated.” This program discusses the nature of complicated grief, which is a significant deviation from the typical grieving process, and how it can result in additional complications and dangers. This includes identifying the patterns associated with complicated grief as well as different approaches to treating it. This educational program combines presentations by experts with video, discussion and additional complimentary learning materials. Transition fair and forum to be at MCCTC

Are you ready to learn more about post-secondary options and employment services for students with disabilities? Attend the Transition Fair and Forum on April 26 from 5-7 p.m. in the Joyce Brooks Center at MCCTC. An eventful evening is planned with more than 25 exhibitors on site from a range of programs, as well as support for students with disabilities, families and educators. This event will showcase training programs, resources and community agencies that facilitate the transition of youth with special needs to community/employment. Breakout sessions include Youngstown State university Disability Services and OhioMeansJobs. Students, families and educators are invited to learn their options, become informed and ask questions. Easter Brunch to be hosted at Fellows Riverside Gardens

Mill Creek MetroParks will host an Easter Brunch at Fellows Riverside Gardens, catered by Inspired Catering by Kravitz. The brunch will take place on April 16 and there will be two seatings, one at 11 a.m. and the other at 2 p.m. The cost is $28 for adults, $15 for children ages 12 and under and free for children under the age of 4. Prices include sales tax and gratuity. Reservations are required and can be made by calling Kravitz’s Garden Cafe at 330-779-8201.

Students taking book donations

Students at Canfield High School in the Interact Club are hosting a used children’s book drive. Books that are in good condition are being collected at the Canfield High School and Canfield Village Middle School libraries until April 26. The books will be donated to the Big Reach Center Of Hope Children Organization in Greenford.

Canfield Local School District receives Auditor of State Award

A recent financial audit of Canfield Local Schools by the Auditor of State’s office has returned a clean audit report. Canfield’s excellent record keeping has earned it the Auditor of State Award again this year. The Auditor of State Award is presented to local governments and school districts upon the completion of a financial audit. Entities that receive the award meet the following criteria of a “clean” audit report: the entity must file timely financial reports with the Auditor of State’s office in accordance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles); the audit report does not contain any findings for recovery, material citations, material weaknesses, significant deficiencies, Single Audit findings or questioned costs; the entity’s management letter contains no comments related to: ethics referrals, questioned costs less than $10,000, lack of timely report submission, reconciliation, failure to obtain a timely Single Audit, findings for recovery less than $100 or public meetings or public records.

James R. Smail named Chairman of the Farmers Trust Company Board

Farmers Trust Company has named James R. Smail, a current member of Farmers National Banc Corporation Board of Directors and the Farmers Trust Company Board of Directors, as Chairman of the Farmers Trust Company Board effective Jan. 1, 2017. Smail has served as a member of the Board of Directors of Farmers Trust Company since July 2015.

Victorian Players to present “Twelfth Night”

The Victorian Players will present Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” on April 15, 21, 22 and 23, directed by Amy Anne Kibler. The Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m.; the Sunday matinee is at 2 p.m. There is NO performance on Easter Sunday. Diabetes self-management education classes to be April 18-20

There will be classes on diabetes self-management education on April 18-20 from 6-8:30 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital’s Azalea Room. The hospital is located at 8401 Market Street on Boardman. Self-Management Education (DSME) sessions will help you learn how to improve your health by taking charge of your diabetes. Sessions include topics such as what diabetes is, diabetes medicines, monitoring your blood glucose, benefits of exercise, diet and customized meal planning. A class session includes a series of three classes in a row on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Sessions are offered weekly, 2 1/2-3 hours each day in the morning or evening at the three hospitals (see class schedule for specific time and place). They are taught by a Registered Nurse Diabetes Educator and Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) Diabetes Educator. A doctor referral is needed to enroll. Victorian Players sponsors trip to Playhouse Square

The Victorian Players Theatre, Inc. is sponsoring a bus trip to Playhouse Square in Cleveland on May 13. They will see a matinee performance of “Something Rotten.” The bus will depart the theatre, located at 702 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown, at 11 a.m. A boxed lunch will be provided. Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for April 17

The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be April 17 from 6-8 p.m. in the small meeting room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, located at 43 W Main St. in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Newcomers of Mahoning Valley to meet on April 26

Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will have their luncheon meeting for this month on April 26 at Nicolinni’s in Boardman at 11:30 a.m. The program will be a speaker from the School of Potential Development, a discussion on autism. They will also be electing officers for next year. Other activities happening this month will be the movie and lunch group on April 19 and needlework on April 11. The book club will be discussing “A Man Called Ova” by Fredrik Backman on April 27. Members will be calling others on updates on Roundtowners and the birthday group. Newcomers welcomes anyone who is looking to learn more about the community and interested in forming new friendships, especially anyone who has had a change in their life and would like to try something new. Cardinal Mooney High School announces 14th annual “Celebrate Mooney” auction

Cardinal Mooney High School has set the date for its 14th annual fundraising Auction as April 29. The largest fundraising event of the year will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St, in Youngstown, from 5:30-11 p.m. Cocktails and a silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are available by calling the school at 330-788-5007 or online through the Auction link on www.cardinalmooney.com Individual tickets are $75, which include dinner and open bar. This year’s theme is “Celebrate Mooney: Embracing Our Past, Highlighting Our Present, and Building a Bright Future.” As part of the celebration, Mooney will be honoring Diane Mastro Nard, Honorary Chairwoman and former CMHS teacher and Speech Coach. Fairgrounds to be location for Color Dash 5K

There will be a Color Dash 5K UV Splash 5K at the Canfield Fairgrounds, located at 7265 Columbiana-Canfield Road in Canfield, on May 5. The packet pick-up and on-site registration will start at 6:30 p.m. with the color dash begins at 8:30 p.m. Start in white apparel and get covered with an array of glowing colors at each kilometer. The color explosion will be at 9:30 p.m. The Color Dash gives back half of all profits to its partner charities, as well as 100 percent of all sponsorships raised. At the Canfield UV Splash, 50 percent of the profits from registration and merchandise stay local, benefitting the SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) Program at Mercy Health Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley SART (Sexual Assault Response Team). These programs provide support care packages for victims of sexual violence and to promote further education for frontline care providers working with victims of sexual violence as well as community education. Walkers and Runners of all ages are invited to participate in this fundraising event.

Canfield United Methodist Holy Week services

Canfield United Methodist Church will host special services for Holy Week. On Easter Sunday, April 16, at 8:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. , the service will be “Jesus is the Answer to Our Prayers.”

Lord of Life Easter services

Worship Schedule Palm Sunday through Easter are as follows: April 15 will be the Easter Vigil with Holy Communion at 7 p.m. and April 16 will be Easter brunch at 9:30 a.m., with Service of celebration of the resurrection of the Lord with Holy Communion at 10:15 a.m.

Lord of Life church egg hunt

An Easter Egg Hunt will take place at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, located at 550 North Broad St. in Canfield, on April 15 beginning at 10 a.m. All Canfield children from infant to age 12 are welcome. The children are to bring a basket in which they will place the eggs that they find. The Easter Bunny is sure to make an appearance. The event will go forward rain or shine.

Every penny counts

Join the Canfield library on April 27 at 6:30 p.m. during Money Smart Week and learn some creative (and mostly painless) ways to save money. They’ll get you started on the road to savings with a free piggy bank. This event is for teens and adults.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Canfield library on April 25 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate stories and activities that will help your child learn about money. Each child will receive a piggy bank. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Canfield library every Thursday in April at 10 a.m.

Family story time

Bring the whole family for stories, games, crafts and fun for all ages at the Canfield library on April 18 at 6 p.m. Children under age 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

Gotta move story time

Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in April at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play. This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care giver.

Take a guess

Guess the number of items in the jar at the Canfield library during library hours in April. The closest guess wins a small prize. This event is for the family.

Lego Mindstorms Robots: part two

Explore the next phase of Lego Mindstorms Robots at the Canfield library on April 22 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Children will work through new stages of building and programming robots with a break to eat, so bring a packed lunch. Attendees must take part one prior to signing up for part two. This is for children in grades 3-7. Space is limited, so register by April 21.

Recycling 101

Earth Day is April 22. See how you can “go green” in many simple ways at the Canfield library on April 17 at 6:30 p.m., and learn how to upcycle old things into new things by making origami flowers out of old books. This event is for teens and adults.

Come join the Canfield library on April 17 at 10 a.m. and tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze: coloring for grown-ups. Colored pencils and markers will be provided, along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This program is for teens and adults only.

World War I centennial

Mark the Centennial of the United States entry into World War I by listening to retired Colonel Rod Hosler speak about Ohio’s contribution to the American Expeditionary Forces at the Canfield library on April 20 at 11 a.m. This event is for adults.

Join the Canfield library in learning how to use your library card to download free movies, TV shows, music, audiobooks, comics and eBooks on April 20 at 6:30 p.m. This class is for adults. Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be July 17

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society.
