Transition fair and forum to be at MCCTC

Are you ready to learn more about post-secondary options and employment services for students with disabilities? Attend the Transition Fair and Forum on April 26 from 5-7 p.m. in the Joyce Brooks Center at MCCTC. An eventful evening is planned with more than 25 exhibitors on site from a range of programs, as well as support for students with disabilities, families and educators. This event will showcase training programs, resources and community agencies that facilitate the transition of youth with special needs to community/employment. Breakout sessions include Youngstown State university Disability Services and OhioMeansJobs. Students, families and educators are invited to learn their options, become informed and ask questions. Easter Brunch to be hosted at Fellows Riverside Gardens

Mill Creek MetroParks will host an Easter Brunch at Fellows Riverside Gardens, catered by Inspired Catering by Kravitz. The brunch will take place on April 16 and there will be two seatings, one at 11 a.m. and the other at 2 p.m. The cost is $28 for adults, $15 for children ages 12 and under and free for children under the age of 4. Prices include sales tax and gratuity. Reservations are required and can be made by calling Kravitz’s Garden Cafe at 330-779-8201.

Diabetes self-management education classes to be April 18-20

There will be classes on diabetes self-management education on April 18-20 from 6-8:30 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital’s Azalea Room. The hospital is located at 8401 Market Street on Boardman. Self-Management Education (DSME) sessions will help you learn how to improve your health by taking charge of your diabetes. Sessions include topics such as what diabetes is, diabetes medicines, monitoring your blood glucose, benefits of exercise, diet and customized meal planning. A class session includes a series of three classes in a row on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Sessions are offered weekly, 2 1/2-3 hours each day in the morning or evening at the three hospitals (see class schedule for specific time and place). They are taught by a Registered Nurse Diabetes Educator and Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) Diabetes Educator. A doctor referral is needed to enroll. Most insurances cover the cost of the classes. To register, call 330-480-2665 to help you get the referral from your physician and to schedule.

Victorian Players to present “Twelfth Night”

The Victorian Players will present Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” on April 15, 21, 22 and 23, directed by Amy Anne Kibler. The Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m.; the Sunday matinee is at 2 p.m. There is NO performance on Easter Sunday. Tickets are $13 for adults, $10 for students and senior citizens, and tickets can be purchased at the door. The box office opens one hour prior to curtain. For reservations, call 330-746-5455.

Victorian Players sponsors trip to Playhouse Square

The Victorian Players Theatre, Inc. is sponsoring a bus trip to Playhouse Square in Cleveland on May 13. They will see a matinee performance of “Something Rotten.” The bus will depart the theatre, located at 702 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown, at 11 a.m. A boxed lunch will be provided. Newcomers of Mahoning Valley to meet on April 26

Newcomers of Mahoning Valley will have their luncheon meeting for this month on April 26 at Nicolinni’s in Boardman at 11:30 a.m. The program will be a speaker from the School of Potential Development, a discussion on autism. They will also be electing officers for next year. Other activities happening this month will be the movie and lunch group on April 19 and needlework on April 11. The book club will be discussing “A Man Called Ova” by Fredrik Backman on April 27. Members will be calling others on updates on Roundtowners and the birthday group. Newcomers welcomes anyone who is looking to learn more about the community and interested in forming new friendships, especially anyone who has had a change in their life and would like to try something new. Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for April 17

The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be April 17 from 6-8 p.m. in the small meeting room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, located at 43 W Main St. in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Cardinal Mooney High School announces 14th annual “Celebrate Mooney” auction

Cardinal Mooney High School has set the date for its 14th annual fundraising Auction as April 29. The largest fundraising event of the year will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St, in Youngstown, from 5:30-11 p.m. Cocktails and a silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are available by calling the school at 330-788-5007 or online through the Auction link on www.cardinalmooney.com Individual tickets are $75, which include dinner and open bar. RSVP by April 15. This year’s theme is “Celebrate Mooney: Embracing Our Past, Highlighting Our Present, and Building a Bright Future.” As part of the celebration, Mooney will be honoring Diane Mastro Nard, Honorary Chairwoman and former CMHS teacher and Speech Coach. Highlights this year include pre-event, online bidding through bipal.net. All auction items are available now for bidding at bidpal.net/mooney. Additional features are a 50/50 raffle, silent and Chinese auctions. Kindergarten registration to be April 26 and 27

Kindergarten registration appointments are still available for the 2017-2018 school year for any student residing in the Austintown School District. April 26 and 27 registration dates still have time slots available. Kindergarten registration packets are available Monday through Friday at Austintown Elementary school from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and at Austintown Early Learning Center from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. The packet explains all necessary documents needed. All new kindergarten students must attend a registration and screening appointment. Registration and Screening for the 2017-2018 school year is done by appointment only. Local group to collect for Measure-Up Campaign

Knights of Columbus, Immacolata Council #15086 will be collecting for the Measure-Up Campaign at the Sparkle Market located in Cornersburg on April 30 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The Measure-Up Campaign is run state-wide in the spring of each year, with the goal being to help those less fortunate with developmental disabilities. The money the council collects is divided, with 80 percent going locally to aid the children at The Rich Center for Autism, located on the Y.S.U. campus. The other 20 percent goes to the Knights of Columbus State Council to be used for projects like Special Olympics and other projects that benefit children with developmental disabilities. All the money goes to help the children. The group will be presenting a check to the children at The Rich Center this fall.

Exploding egg art

Create works of art using paint, eggs, bubbles, salt and more at the Austintown library on April 22 at 11 a.m. Children will get messy, so dress appropriately. This event is for the entire family.

Early release day on May 10 cancelled

At a regularly scheduled board meeting on March 15, the Austintown Board of Education approved the resolution to revise the 2016-2017 school calendar to reflect that May 10 will be a full student day and not an early release day. The early release days are used for administration and staff to engage in professional development, but due to students attending Camp Fitch the May early release day has been cancelled. Professional development planned is still set to take place and will be worked into school hours.

Smart money picture bingo

Celebrate Smart Money Week at the Austintown library on April 29 at 11 a.m. with fun and prizes for the whole family. Picture Bingo for all ages. Each child will receive a piggy bank. Children must be accompanied by an adult to this half-hour program. This is for the family.

Pre-Kindergarten story time

This program is for 4 and 5-year-old children to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. You will use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts at the Austintown library at 11:30 a.m. every Wednesday in April to help your child get ready for kindergarten.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Austintown library every Tuesday in April at 10 a.m.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Austintown library every Wednesday in April at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Grab and go craft for April

Make a craft to take home during library hours in the month of April at the Austintown library. Children of all ages are invited to participate.

Gotta move story time

Join the Austintown library every Thursday in April at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play. This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care giver.

Join the Austintown library on April 28 at 11 a.m. to learn how to create a paper craft. Registration is required. This is for adults.

Kinect sports for seniors

Have fun participating in sports without the sweat and stress at the Austintown library on April 21 at 10 a.m. Play virtual sports on the big screen. You can bowl, play soccer, table tennis, beach volleyball, box or even try track and field events. The event promises to be a morning of fun and light refreshments. This is for adults only.

Watch movies at the library

Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie at the Austintown library on April 25 at 6 p.m. The movie will be a newly released DVD rated PG or G. This is for the family. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Would you like to learn how to download free eBooks, audiobooks, movies, TV shows, music, complete issues of magazines and more to your computer and mobile devices? Come to the Austintown library on April 24 at 6 p.m. This event is for adults.

Open enrollment for 2017-2018

The Austintown Local Schools is now accepting enrollment for the 2017-2018 school year. The district is currently taking students in grades kindergarten through eighth-grade, based on current class size availability. Although grades 9-12 are closed, students are still able to apply for special programs, such as Falcon Pride Online and STEM. Chapter Chat book club

Love books? Go to the Chapter Chat Book Club where they will be reading and discussing a book together every month. Each month will be a new genre. This month’s book is “Catch-22” by Joseph Heller and will take place at the Austintown library on April 26 at 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. This club is for adults.

Love books? Looking for a good read? Hear what others are reading and share your favorite read, or just come and join the fun at the Austintown library on April 19 at 6 p.m. This club is for adults.

IHM Run Festival to be June 8

This is the annual 5K run that gets the local community festival off to a great running start. The date is set for June 8. The start time is 7 p.m. Runners, be sure to mark your calendar now so you don’t miss out on one of the longest standing 5K runs in the area. For a $10 entry fee, runners can run through local neighborhood roads and finish near the festival grounds. All runners must be registered to participate. Online registration is available at runsignup.com/race/oh/austintown/ihmfestival5k. Race day registration will start at 5 p.m. in front of the education building at 4490 Norquest Blvd. in Austintown. Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. This location is handicapped accessible. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard. This location is handicapped accessible. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be July 17

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Trash and Treasure sale to be May 20

The Austintown Night Out Committee is hosting a Trash and Treasure sale on May 20 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Austintown Township Park. Spaces are $10 each. The event is outside and is rain or shine.
