Musical program to mark Holocaust

Youngstown Chamber Music will present a program commemorating Yom Hashoah, featuring music from composers affected by the Holocaust, both Jewish and non-Jewish. It will take place next Thursday from noon to 2:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room of the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane. Admission is $5 (free for JCC members).

Youngstown Chamber Music is a troupe of musicians from the ranks of both the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and faculty from Youngstown State University. Directors Michael Strauss, principal viola of the YSO and faculty at Youngstown State University; and Joseph Kromholz, assistant concertmaster of the YSO and faculty at YSU, will be joined by their colleagues.

Free golf at Parto’s course

Riverwalk fest seeks artists, performers

NEW CASTLE, PA.

The Hoyt Center for the Arts is accepting applications for artists, presenters, performers and musicians interested in participating in the fourth annual Arts on the Riverwalk festival Sept. 9. Most activities will run from 3-8 p.m., followed by a closing concert and fireworks starting at 8 p.m.

Booths are available to rent in the artists market (must be original works).

There will also be an arts competition open to artists age 18 and up within 50 miles of New Castle. Registration day will take place Aug. 19 at the Hoyt, 124 E. Leasure Ave. Entry fee is $10 per piece and there will be cash awards.

Unplugged stage and street performers of any discipline are invited to register. There is no fee to participate, and tips go to the performer. Gallery reception for guest artist

A gallery reception by guest artist Carrie Longley will take place April 20 at 11:30 a.m. in the Judith Rae Solomon Gallery, which is on the second floor of Bliss Hall, on the Youngstown State University campus.

Longley also will present a workshop at 2 p.m. in Bliss Hall Room 1062. Both events are free and open to the public.

Longley is a studio artist and educator, and is chairwoman of the fine and performing arts department and assistant professor of fine art at Indiana University East.

Her artwork investigates the relationship between the art object and scientific specimen, celebrating the space between illusion and reality. She exhibits her work extensively throughout the United States and has received numerous awards.

She uses the malleable characteristics of clay in combination with wire, pig intestine and wax to create small-scale sculptures, which resemble preserved scientific specimens. They echo features found on earthly beings, but the new combinations result in mysterious forms that are both seductive and slightly grotesque. The forms display warty surfaces, soft, fleshy folds and puckered openings, suggestive of organic growth.

Westminster choirs present free concert

NEW WILMINGTON, PA.

The Westminster College choral department, under the direction of Samuel Barbara, will present a spring concert of music that ranges from the Renaissance era to the 21st century. All four Westminster College choirs will be represented at the concert, which will take place at 3 p.m. April 23 in Wallace Memorial Chapel, on the college campus.

The concert, which is free to the public, will also serve as a farewell to graduating seniors.
