The arrest of a man Monday morning on a murder charge capped off a weekend in which city police seized six guns.
Jermaine Anthony Tubbs, 26, turned himself in to police in connection with the slaying of Michael Brooks, 52, who was shot to death about 12:30 a.m. Monday at an apartment on Dupont Avenue on the North Side.
Tubbs turned himself in at 9 a.m. at the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office. Chief of Detectives Capt. Brad Blackburn said Brooks and Tubbs knew each other but did not provide anymore specifics.
The death of Brooks is the seventh homicide in the city this year. In 2016, Youngstown had 18 homicides and did not record its seventh homicide until May 8.
About 7:30 p.m. Sunday LaMarcus Williams, 24, of Sherwood Avenue, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon after he told police who were answering a gunfire call in the 2500 block of Glenwood Avenue that he had a gun with him. Reports said officers found a .38-caliber revolver, and Williams was taken to the county jail.
About 7 p.m. Saturday Ronald Stevens, 44, of Hanley Avenue, was arrested on charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, possession of drugs, endangering children, being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of heroin, possession of cocaine and open container after he was pulled over at Saranac and Wick avenues for running a stop sign.
Reports said Stevens smelled of alcohol and told police he was drinking. There also was a small child in the van he was driving, reports said. A relative came for the child.
Police found a .38-caliber revolver inside the van and heroin and crack cocaine in a pill bottle Stevens had, reports said. Reports said Stevens resisted being driven to the police station to take a breath test, then when he got there he forced himself to vomit. There is no record of him being at the jail but the charges were filed against him Monday in municipal court.
Four adults and a juvenile were cited about 5 p.m Saturday on the East Side after police responded to a call of gunfire in the 300 block of North Garland Avenue and found the males behind a building. They admitted shooting guns, reports said. The adults who were cited are Rual Lopez, 48, of North Garland Avenue; Brian Rose, 34, of Martin Luther King Boulevard; Angel Perez, 35, of East Philadelphia Avenue; and Eddie Gonzalez, 24, no address listed.
Police also took two handguns there and several rounds of ammunition, reports said.
About 4:40 p.m. Saturday, police pulled over a car at West Indianola and Glenwood avenues driven by Anthony Hobbs, 26, of Garfield Street, after a records check found the car was stolen. Reports said a handgun was found under the seat of a passenger, Javon Sutton-Elliot, 26, of West Judson Avenue. The gun, a .40-caliber Glock, was reported stolen in September from Liberty, reports said.
Sutton-Elliot was booked into the jail on charges of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, being a felon in possession of a firearm and receiving stolen property. Hobbs was booked on charges of receiving stolen property, driving under suspension and possession of drug paraphernalia for a scale that was found in the door next to his seat.
About 1:40 a.m. Saturday Duane Eldridge, 45, of Carrol Street, was issued a citation for improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle. Reports said officers were issuing parking tickets outside of Club BBU, 21 W. Hylda Ave., when they spotted Elridge asleep in a car that was parked on the sidewalk across the street. Police woke Elridge up and he admitted there was a gun in the car but said the car was his brother’s, reports said. The gun, a .45-caliber semiautomatic, was found under the passenger seat and loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition, reports said.
