Baseball falls in 10 to league-leading Raiders

The Youngstown State baseball team overcame a five-run deficit to force extra innings but fell 11-8 to Wright State at Eastwood Field.

Youngstown State trailed 5-0 after two innings but tied the game with five runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Penguins then scored twice in the ninth to tie the game at 8-8 before the Raiders plated three runs in the 10th.

Wright State improved to 10-0 in Horizon League play and 20-7 overall, and YSU dropped to 7-19, 3-7.

YSU’s Lorenzo Arcuri had two hits and two RBIs, and his infield single in the ninth provided the tying run. Andrew Kendrick also had two RBIs, and Nico Padovan scored three times for the Penguins.

The first two Raiders of the game walked off YSU starter Gino DiVincenzo, and Adrian Marquez homered to the right-field bullpen to give Wright State a 3-0 lead. The Raiders added two runs in the second on a single by Zach Weatherford and a sacrifice fly by Matt Morrow.

The Penguins and Raiders will play a doubleheader today beginning at noon.

Five win events in track and field

Chad Zallow, Collin Harden, Amber Eles, Chenera Lacey and Jaliyah Elliott all won events at the George Mason Invitational for Youngstown State.

Harden set the school record in the 400m hurdles with a time of 51.98 seconds. Harden broke the mark of 52.11 which had been held since 1991 by John Payne. Harden’s previous top performance was 52.80 seconds in the event. He won Saturday’s race by an impressive 1.49 seconds.

Zallow took first in the 100m dash running a time of 10.69 seconds. He won the race by 0.02 seconds ahead of VCU’s Jamik Alexander. Later in the meet, Zallow was second in the 200m dash with a career-best time of 21.30 seconds.

Elliott won the 200m dash with a career-best time of 24.28 seconds. She won the race by 0.46 seconds ahead of GMU’s Ashley Lucas. Her mark was the sixth-fastest 200 in school history.

Eles ran a season-best time of 13.75 seconds to win the 100m hurdles. She won the race by just over half-a-second ahead of VMI’s Yaa Agyepong-Wiafe.

Lacey won the high jump clearing the bar at 1.65m sharing first place with VCU’s Christina Soloman. They both cleared 1.60m and 1.65m on their first attempts, but failed to clear the bar on additional jumps.

Men’s tennis falls 4-3 to Detroit Mercy

The Youngstown State men’s tennis team dropped a tough 4-3 contest to Detroit at the Boardman Tennis Center.

The Penguins (15-7, 3-2 Horizon League) were going for a school single-season win mark but came up short to UDM (7-11 and 1-1). The Titans also stopped the Penguins’ three-match win streak.

Detroit put the Penguins in 1-0 hole winning two of three matches to earn the doubles point. YSU was victorious at No. 2 at Joao Garretto and Danylo Veremeichuk picked up a 6-1 win, but UDM won 6-3 and No. 1 and 6-2 at No. 3 to claim the point.

Women’s tennis wins over Detroit Mercy

The Youngstown State women’s tennis team had a strong outing in a 5-2 victory over Detroit at the Boardman Tennis Center.

The Penguins jumped out quickly by winning the doubles point in strong fashion. At No. 1, Nehel Sahni and Noelly Longi Nsimba won 6-1 and at No. 2 Imaan Hassim and Sofia Macias earned an impressive 6-0 win.

In singles play, YSU won the first four completed matches winning at No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5.

At No. 2, Nsimba won 7-5, 6-0, at No. 3, Macias picked up a 6-0, 7-5 win. At No. 4, Hassim cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win and at No. 5, Sahni won 7-5, 6-3.

The Penguins are back in action today against Oakland. The match is slated for 1 p.m. at the YSU Tennis Courts.
