Media award

Andria Morningstar-Gray of Newton Falls has received the Dan Maclachlan School Library Media Award from Kent State University’s School of Library and Information Science or iSchool.

The award, given to iSchool graduates who have exhibited creativity, leadership and dedication to the K-12 audience, will be presented at a ceremony at Kent State University on April 25.

Morningstar-Gray has a bachelor’s degree in education, K-12 language arts; a master’s degree in education, gifted intervention specialist; and last year earned her master’s degree in library and information science with a concentration in school library media from KSU.

A native of Southington, she is the Lakeview High School eighth-grade through 12-grade library media specialist and eighth-grade gifted English teacher.

She said her career goal is to empower students to learn in the way they choose and provide the tools needed to collaboratively solve problems and connect to the world in ways that make learning authentic and rich and less test-driven.

Principal of the Year

The Ohio Alliance of Black School Educators honored Artemus Scissum, principal at Martin Luther King Elementary School, at its Principal Appreciation and Student Recognition Banquet on Saturday in Columbus.

The organization honored Scissum as a Principal of the Year.

Scissum, a 1990 graduate of East High School, joined the Youngstown City School District as a principal in 2010.

He’s led MLK on the city’s East Side for four years.

OABSE is an affiliate of the National Alliance of Black School Educators, a nonprofit organization “devoted to furthering the academic success for the nation’s children – particularly children of African descent,” according to the organization’s website.

Diamond coach

A local speech and debate coach has received national recognition. Eric Simione, a coach at Boardman High School, is a winner of the National Speech and Debate Association’s Diamond Coach Award. He is one of 33 coaches from across the country to receive the award.

To earn a diamond award, a coach must be a member of the national association for at least five years. They earn “diamond levels” by earning points from the society.

Simione was one of the highest-achieving coaches honored with this year’s award, earning a spot at the “fourth diamond” level. Only one other person earned more points than him.
