YSU jazz ensembles present free concert
Staff report
YOUNGSTOWN
The Youngstown State University jazz ensembles, directed by Kent Engelhardt and Dave Kana, will present a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Kilcawley Center’s Chestnut Room.
The first ensemble, directed by Kana, will perform music by Sammy Nestico, Herbie Hancock and Nat Adderley.
Engelhardt’s ensemble will perform music by YSU alumnus and recent guest artist Dave Rivello, including “Dancing In Circles,” “A Series Of Short Prayers,” “Re-Imagining The World” and “I Wasn’t Asking.”
Rivello and his ensemble rehearsed the music with Engelhardt’s ensemble during their residency in March in preparation for this concert.
A 1986 Dana School of Music graduate, Rivello is a freelance composer, arranger and bandleader based in upstate New York. He leads a 12-piece band – the Dave Rivello Ensemble – that is his main orchestral voice. He has served as composer-in-residence at many schools, writing for their ensembles and giving clinics and private lessons. His residencies have been sponsored by Meet The Composer, Harvard Project Zero and the New York Council of the Arts. Rivello has donated copies of the music to the YSU Jazz Library.
Parking is available in the Wick Avenue parking deck via Walnut Street for a nominal fee. Watch for detours due to the avenue’s reconstruction.
