Friendly Squares to dance on April 8
The Niles Friendly Squares will host its monthly square dance on April 8 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Dress is casual and there is a $6 donation per person at the door. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Holy Week activities planned at Prince of Peace Lutheran
Prince of Peace Lutheran, located at 2985 Center Road in Poland, will observe Palm Sunday/Passion Sunday with worship at 10 a.m. Maundy Thursday begins with a Soup Supper from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and worship at 7 p.m. Good Friday worship is at 7 p.m. Easter Sunday worship begins at 10 a.m. All are Welcome. The Poland area churches will have an ecumenical Good Friday Service on April 14 at Holy Family, located at 2731 Center Road in Poland, at 12 p.m.
Local church to have rummage sale
Struthers Parkside Church will be hosting a rummage sale on April 22 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at 110 Poland Ave. in Struthers. There will be a variety of items such as toys, books, household items, holiday decor and more. Specialty items will also be on sale. Lunch will be sold, as well as baked goods. There will be a basket raffle. Drawings will take place at the end of the sale. You need not be present. Proceeds from the sale will be used for repairs and missions.
PJWC egg hunt today
The Poland Junior Women’s Club (PJWC) will be hosting its annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 8, starting at 1 p.m. The event will take place at Poland Village Town Hall and Gazebo Grounds, and all children through fourth-grade and their families are invited to attend. Children up to age 3 will go first at 1 p.m. followed by ages 4-6 at 1:30 p.m. and ages 7-10 at 2 p.m. Extra activities include face painting, story time, balloon animals, character visits, community vehicles, cookies and cocoa and photos with the Easter Bunny. Youth Ministry pancake breakfast
A pancake and sausage breakfast will take place on April 9 from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the Holy Family Parish Center. “Free Will” donations will be accepted with all proceeds to be donated to the Holy Family Youth Ministry to help finance its missionary trip to the Appalachian area of Kentucky in June. Come enjoy a breakfast and donate to the extremely worthy mission of the youth group. This breakfast is being sponsored by the Holy Family Council of the Knights of Columbus 15573.
Knitting Guild meeting to be April 11
The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on April 11 at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. A brief program on Knitting Slang will be presented and members are encouraged to bring and show their knitted Herringbone Stitch pillows. Celebrate the birthday of William Shakespeare while learning about the famous bard at the Poland library on April 26 at 9 a.m. This event includes displays and hands-on activities. It promises to be fun for all ages.
ABWA meeting to be April 11
The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will meet on April 11 at 6:30 p.m. at A La Cart in Canfield. Dinner will be southern baked chicken, roast beef, potato au gratin, peas and carrots, salad, Jello, cole slaw and dessert. The cost is $18. The speaker for the evening will be Chief Don Hutchinson of the Cardinal Fire Department, to speak on the drug problem in Ohio.

Join the Poland library on April 27 at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate stories and activities that will help your child learn about money. Each child will receive a piggy bank. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Easter egg earrings
Make a pair of adorable Easter egg earrings during the jewelry program at the Poland library on April 10 at 6:30 p.m. You will learn simple jewelry making techniques while creating a project you can take home that night. No supplies are needed. Beginners are welcome. Space is limited, so registration recommended. This event is for tweens, teens and adults.

Cemeteries are valuable, seemingly permanent places to uncover genealogical information and local history. But will they always be a part of the landscape in family history research? During the 21st century it is likely that dwindling land space, environmental concerns, the surge in non-burial options and the availability of new technologies all will lead to significant changes in death rituals. Montessori pasta dinner
A pasta dinner will take place on April 8 from 4-8 p.m. at the Poland United Methodist Church. The dinner will benefit The Montessori School of the Mahoning Valley. Mark your calendar for an evening of family fun and food. The church is located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road. Dinner (eat-in or carry-out) will be $8 for adults and $6 for children. The price includes: pasta, meatballs, salad, bread and dessert. Purchase a pie or cake from the bake sale, shop for fun and interesting items at the World Market and enjoy a talent show put on by Montessori students and families. All proceeds directly benefit The Montessori School of the Mahoning Valley. The school, celebrating its 40th anniversary, serves children ages 3-14.
Incoming freshmen orientation
There will be an orientation meeting for all eighth-grade students and their parents who reside in the Poland School District on April 10. The meeting will take place in the Poland High School Auditorium at 7 p.m. Poland High School’s counselors will provide information which will assist incoming freshmen make wise decisions about their course selection. Topics to be covered will include: graduation requirements, end of course exams/graduation points, course levels and curriculum choices, post-secondary/college entrance requirements, athletic participation rules/OHSAA and extracurricular options. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be July 17
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Lions host Treasures of the Trunk Sale
The Poland Lions will host a “Treasures of the Trunk Sale” to benefit the Poland Lions Scholarship and Community Funds on June 10 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Poland High School stadium parking lot. The Lions are currently looking for venders for the one-day sale, including crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and venders with garage sale items. There is a limit of 100 spaces, so reserve your space early. Registration is $10 per one parking space prior to May 1. After May 1, the cost is $15 per space. Venders must bring their own tables.
