A team of four students from the Canfield Village Middle School MathCounts program is headed to the state MathCounts competition on March 11. The team will travel to the state competition at Columbus State Community College in Columbus and sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers.
CVMS math teacher Shelly Dwyer serves as coach of the team, which members include Ben Martin, Emily Mashqbeh, Aaron Ferguson and Hayden Nottingham.
The team of four came in first at the MathCounts competition at Youngstown State University on Feb. 9. The top three teams advanced to the state competition.
CVMS student Morgan Carey will also travel to the MathCounts state competition to compete as an individual.
“The state competition will be similar to the local competition with several rounds of questions, some with calculators, some without. There are some where they can work as a team, and some they work individually,” Dwyer said.
Dwyer has been coaching students in MathCounts for five years and every year has had at least one student go to the state competition.
“Each year, I have had at least one student go to state. I also had one other team go to state about five years ago,” Dwyer said.
Other members of the CVMS MathCounts program included Grace Li, Claire Audia, Maggie Carrier, Emma Castronova and Marissa Ieraci.
“In addition, I had four alternates attend the YSU competition and two others who participated in MathCounts practice but did not go to the competition. Individually, Ben Martin came in second and Aaron Ferguson came in fourth against about 130 other students. Also, all 10 of our competitors were in the top 25 percent of competitors at YSU,” Dwyer said.
