U.S. Marshals on Wednesday arrested a township man wanted for burglary and assault.

Rodney Smallwood, 22, was arrested after he was found hiding under a bed at a Melrose Avenue residence, according to a police report.

The charges stem from a March 25 incident on Clifton Drive. A woman reported that Smallwood entered her home without permission and assaulted her 14-year-old son. The victim and his friends told police the assault had to do with someone “talking smack” about Smallwood.

Invited for coffee

YOUNGSTOWN

Part of trail closed

After consultation with Weathersfield Township, city of Niles officials and the Trumbull County Engineer’s office, Ed Stredney, Niles service director, decided to temporarily close the portion of the bike trail between state Route 46 and Ruppell Road until further notice for safety reasons.

Sawmill destroyed

MERCER, PA.

Fire officials are still trying to determine the cause of a fire in Mercer County that left an Amish business in ruins.

According to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday, fire crews were called out to the J&R Sawmill on the 300 block of Greenfield Road in Lackwannock Township. Fire departments from Mercer and Lawrence County were called out to help, but the business burned to the ground in just a short time. No one was injured .

Facing sex charges

BAZETTA

A hearing is set Monday in Central District Court in Cortland for a Bazetta man charged with sex crimes.

Ronnie Chalker, 44, appeared in court on Wednesday, where he pleaded not guilty to two counts of gross sexual imposition, according to 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner.

Police said Chalker is charged under a state law prohibiting anyone from threatening or forcing someone else to have sexual contact with them.

A judge, who set bond at $5,000 on each count, also ordered Chalker to stay at least 500 yards from the alleged victim and to have no other form of contact with him or her. Chalker remains in the Trumbull County jail.
