Canfield council honors those who served the city
CANFIELD
City council awarded commendations to people who have served the city well and made a difference.
Officer Jennifer Calko of the Columbiana Police Department received a Police Commendation Award from Canfield police Chief Chuck Colucci at Wednesday’s council meeting for her part in apprehending a suspect after a February robbery at the Farmer’s National Bank in Canfield.
Calko was on patrol for the city of Columbiana the day of the robbery and spotted a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle. Suspecting the vehicle might belong to the bank robber, she stopped the vehicle and found the stolen money inside the car.
Calko found and stopped the suspect less than 20 minutes after the first police alert concerning the robbery was issued.
Also recognized were a group of students from the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center for their work repairing rotten pavilion poles at Greasel Park in Canfield.
The students – Andrew Jacobs, Katavian Rivers-Solomon, William Scott, Korron Devoe and Chris Felgar – are seniors in the MCCTC’s “Machine Team.”
The students drew up and presented proposals, developed blueprints and created and installed the replacement poles for the pavilions.
Council estimated that contracting the job out would have cost the city at least $15,000, but thanks to the students’ work, it cost the city less than $500 in materials.
