Cardinal Mooney High School announces 14th annual “Celebrate Mooney” auction

Cardinal Mooney High School has set the date for its 14th annual fundraising Auction as April 29. The largest fundraising event of the year will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St, in Youngstown, from 5:30-11 p.m. Cocktails and a silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are available by calling the school at 330-788-5007 or online through the Auction link on www.cardinalmooney.com Individual tickets are $75, which include dinner and open bar. RSVP by April 15. This year’s theme is “Celebrate Mooney: Embracing Our Past, Highlighting Our Present, and Building a Bright Future.” As part of the celebration, Mooney will be honoring Diane Mastro Nard, Honorary Chairwoman and former CMHS teacher and Speech Coach. Highlights this year include pre-event, online bidding through bipal.net. All auction items are available now for bidding at bidpal.net/mooney. Additional features are a 50/50 raffle, silent and Chinese auctions. Auction items include Dinner for Six with the Bishop, Autographed Sports Memorabilia, fine jewelry, travel packages, Mooney paraphernalia and more. Friendly Squares to dance on April 8

The Niles Friendly Squares will host its monthly square dance on April 8 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Dress is casual and there is a $6 donation per person at the door. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. It’s “Team T-shirt Night,” a great time to wear that T-shirt and show your pride and support for your favorite team. Gene Hammond will be the caller. The Gathering Place to have event on April 10

The Gathering Place will have an event on April 10 at 11 a.m. Bailey Yoder, a YSU student, from the Youngstown Historical Center of Labor & Industry/Steel Museum, will be speaking on the History of the Steel Industry in Youngstown. Lunch will be provided by The Woodlands. All seniors welcome, bring a friend.

Fairgrounds to be location for Color Dash 5K

There will be a Color Dash 5K UV Splash 5K at the Canfield Fairgrounds, located at 7265 Columbiana-Canfield Road in Canfield, on May 5. The packet pick-up and on-site registration will start at 6:30 p.m. with the color dash begins at 8:30 p.m. Start in white apparel and get covered with an array of glowing colors at each kilometer. The color explosion will be at 9:30 p.m. The Color Dash gives back half of all profits to its partner charities, as well as 100 percent of all sponsorships raised. At the Canfield UV Splash, 50 percent of the profits from registration and merchandise stay local, benefitting the SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) Program at Mercy Health Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley SART (Sexual Assault Response Team). These programs provide support care packages for victims of sexual violence and to promote further education for frontline care providers working with victims of sexual violence as well as community education. Walkers and Runners of all ages are invited to participate in this fundraising event.

Students taking children’s book donations

Students at Canfield High School in the Interact Club are hosting a used children’s book drive. Books that are in good condition are being collected at the Canfield High School and Canfield Village Middle School libraries until April 26. The books will be donated to the Big Reach Center Of Hope Children Organization in Greenford.

Canfield United Methodist Holy Week services

Canfield United Methodist Church will host special services for Holy Week. On Holy Tuesday, April 11, at 7 p.m. will be a service that follows the events of Holy Week from Palm Sunday to Easter. This service is perfect for people who will miss Easter at Canfield United Methodist Church. On Maundy Thursday, April 13, at 7 p.m., will be a service engaging the events of the Last Supper and the arrest of Jesus. On Good Friday, April 14, at 7:30 p.m., there will be a service where “We are the Reason that Jesus Gave His Life” is the theme, as those in attendance will hear the story of Jesus’ crucifixion. On Easter Sunday, April 16, at 8:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. , the service will be “Jesus is the Answer to Our Prayers.”

Knitting Guild meeting to be April 11

The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on April 11 at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. A brief program on Knitting Slang will be presented and members are encouraged to bring and show their knitted Herringbone Stitch pillows. Newcomers Club of Canfield to meet

The April meeting of the Newcomers Club of Canfield will be hosted by Jill Daley. It will take place on April 11 at the home studio of Darrel Clegg in Canfield. Clegg is a metal jewelry artist who sells his jewelry art online and at many local art shows. The business meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. and then the creating starts. They will be making a pendant and earring set for the cost of $25 per person. There will be snacks and cocktails. Daley will need a head count for that evening for the supply inventory. The purpose of the Newcomers Club of Canfield is to provide an opportunity for members of the community in and around Canfield to develop friendships, welcome newcomers and to support the civic, social and charitable life of the community. Reptiles and Amphibians of NE Ohio

Join Mahoning County OSU Extension and fellow industry professionals to learn about spring peepers and other reptiles and amphibians in Northeast Ohio. Speakers for the program are David Dimitrie, PhD student from Case Western Reserve University and Teal Richards-Dimitrie, Herpetologist at EnviroScience, Inc. The program will take place April 11 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Canfield Fairgrounds, located at 7265 Columbiana Canfield Road in Canfield. Lord of Life Easter services

Worship Schedule Palm Sunday through Easter are as follows: April 9 will be a reading of the Passion at 10:15 a.m., April 12 will be service of the word and healing at 7 p.m., April 13 is Holy Thursday for children at 5 p.m. and service of Holy Communion with foot washing at 7 p.m., April 14 will be Good Friday service, reading of the Passion and procession of the Cross at 7 p.m., April 15 will be the Easter Vigil with Holy Communion at 7 p.m. and April 16 will be Easter brunch at 9:30 a.m., with Service of celebration of the resurrection of the Lord with Holy Communion at 10:15 a.m.

Lord of Life church egg hunt

An Easter Egg Hunt will take place at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, located at 550 North Broad St. in Canfield, on April 15 beginning at 10 a.m. All Canfield children from infant to age 12 are welcome. The children are to bring a basket in which they will place the eggs that they find. The Easter Bunny is sure to make an appearance. The event will go forward rain or shine.

ABWA meeting to be April 11

The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will meet on April 11 at 6:30 p.m. at A La Cart in Canfield. Dinner will be southern baked chicken, roast beef, potato au gratin, peas and carrots, salad, Jello, cole slaw and dessert. The cost is $18. The speaker for the evening will be Chief Don Hutchinson of the Cardinal Fire Department, to speak on the drug problem in Ohio.

Join the Canfield library on April 27 at 6:30 p.m. during Money Smart Week and learn some creative (and mostly painless) ways to save money. They’ll get you started on the road to savings with a free piggy bank. This event is for teens and adults.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Canfield library on April 25 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate stories and activities that will help your child learn about money. Each child will receive a piggy bank. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Canfield library every Thursday in April at 10 a.m.

Join the Canfield library on April 11 and 18 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Fun time for 4s and 5s

Join the Canfield library on April 11 at 11:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes and finger plays, and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Family story time

Bring the whole family for stories, games, crafts and fun for all ages at the Canfield library on April 18 at 6 p.m. Children under age 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

Gotta move story time

Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in April at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play. This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care giver.

Take a guess

Guess the number of items in the jar at the Canfield library during library hours in April. The closest guess wins a small prize. This event is for the family.

Lego Mindstorms Robots: part two

Explore the next phase of Lego Mindstorms Robots at the Canfield library on April 22 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Children will work through new stages of building and programming robots with a break to eat, so bring a packed lunch. Attendees must take part one prior to signing up for part two. This is for children in grades 3-7. Space is limited, so register by April 21.

Recycling 101

Earth Day is April 22. See how you can “go green” in many simple ways at the Canfield library on April 17 at 6:30 p.m., and learn how to upcycle old things into new things by making origami flowers out of old books. This event is for teens and adults.

It’s raining cats and dogs and turtles and frogs

Join in the fun to check out all the new umbrellas in the Canfield library Early Learning Area at the Canfield library during library hours in April. Vote for your favorite umbrella and help us choose our April winner. Mark the Centennial of the United States entry into World War I by listening to retired Colonel Rod Hosler speak about Ohio’s contribution to the American Expeditionary Forces at the Canfield library on April 20 at 11 a.m. This event is for adults.

Open mic night and poetry slam

If you’re a poet and you know it... Do you have a poem or short story that you would like to share? Come to the Canfield library on April 13 at 6:30 p.m. for open mic night. They will serve tea between performances.

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on April 15 and 16.

Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be July 17

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Chair yoga
