Berlin Yacht Club offers class at MCCTC
Learn to sail this May with the Berlin Yacht Club (BYC) at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center (MCCTC).
Sailing classes for adult beginners will take place May 2-23, at the MCCTC in Canfield. The cost of the class is $74, which includes the textbook. All students taking the class are also invited to sail with members of the Berlin Yacht Club on Berlin Lake in North Benton, at no additional charge.
The class is taught by a certified instructor from the Berlin Yacht Club. Students will learn important terms and vocabulary, the mechanics of sailing, safety considerations and some rules for navigating on the water with other boats. Students will also hear from members of BYC who will enthusiastically share their passion and knowledge of sailing and sailboat racing. The class includes an on-shore practice session on a member’s boat at the BYC anchorage, and an opportunity to take to the water with experienced sailors. Go to the MCCTC website to sign up for class (http:// mahoningctc.com/fun-educational-special-interest-classes/).
In addition to covering sailing basics, the class will also help to remove any perceived barriers to entry into this exciting sport. Sailing is a sport for anybody who has an inclination to be on the water. The instructors and other members of the Berlin Yacht Club are welcoming to those wanting to learn to sail and helpful in lending their time and the use of their boats to facilitate the opportunity to learn.
The Berlin Yacht Club has been a sailing club on Berlin Lake for more than 65 years. It is a casual, family-friendly organization that boasts sailors from all walks of life from 8- to 80-years-old. Members and friends enjoy racing, day sailing, dinners and picnic events. Racing takes place Sunday afternoons, Wednesday evenings and single-handed boats on Tuesday evenings.
