The trial date for Russell Lauer III of Cortland, charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, drunken driving and failing to stop after his SUV struck and fatally injured a jogger in Fowler Township last year, has been moved for the third time. Trumbull Common Pleas Judge Peter Kontos granted a request from Lauer’s defense attorney and set a new trial date of July 10.
Lauer, 43, is charged in the death of Brittany Swedko, 27, of Cortland, who died of injuries March 1, 2016, two days after the accident on Ridge Road. Swedko had been training for a half-marathon. Lauer remains jailed in lieu of $215,000 bond.
Crews battle 2 fires
YOUNGSTOWN
City firefighters early Monday and early Sunday battled blazes at two South Side homes close to each other.
About 2:45 a.m. Monday crews were called to a vacant 2932 Hillman St. home where they found a heavy fire on the side of the home. Crews managed to get inside, and one of the department’s ladder trucks was used to help fight the flames. Damage is listed at $9,180, a total loss.
About 3:15 a.m. Sunday, crews were called to a vacant 606 W. Ravenwood Ave. home, where they found flames on the first and second floor, and part of the house collapsed. Crews also hosed down nearby houses to protect them from the flames, reports said. Damage there is listed at $11,840, also a total loss. Both fires are under investigation.
Donation to YSU

The Payiavlas family, owners of AVI Foodsystems in Warren, is donating $500,000 to Youngstown State University to name the classroom that is part of the new sports media center at Stambaugh Stadium.
In recognition of the donation, YSU will name the classroom in the Don Constantini Multimedia Center at Stambaugh Stadium for the Payiavlas family. The center will be built atop the east side of the stadium and include classroom space for YSU’s sports broadcasting program.
OD antidote used

First-responders revived a man using Narcan, an opioid-overdose antidote, on Friday, according to a police report. The man’s girlfriend told police he drove her to a Vollmer Drive address, where he got out of the vehicle and told her he was sick and couldn’t talk anymore. Moments later, he became unresponsive. Paramedics administered Narcan, reviving the man. No charges have been filed.
Office hours
The Ohio Secretary of State’s Office will have local office hours from 1 to 3 p.m. April 18 at the Boardman library branch, 7680 Glenwood Ave., and from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. April 25 at the Warren library branch, 444 Mahoning Ave. Residents can obtain election information and learn about business programs offered by the secretary of state.
