NYPL to give out scholarships
niles
The Class-A Short-Season New York-Penn League and its philanthropic arm, the NYPL Charitable Foundation, again will award more than $10,000 in scholarships this summer to high school graduates from the league’s 14 markets.
Now in its ninth year, the 2017 NYPL Scholarship Contest is open to any graduating senior within the league’s footprint. Any student who has been accepted at a two- or four-year college or university, vocational school, or technical education institution is eligible.
Applicants will be judged based on academic performance, volunteer and extracurricular activities, and the impact their local NYPL club and Minor League Baseball have had on their lives.
The scholarship contest will consist of two stages — a local round and a league round. In the local stage, students will apply directly to their local NYPL team, with one applicant chosen by each of the 14 teams to advance to the league/final round.
The 14 finalists will then be judged by league representatives. Three applicants will be selected to receive the top prize of a $2,500 scholarship. All other finalists will receive a $250 book award.
Applications from the Mahoning Valley Scrappers may be obtained by visiting www.mvscrappers.com, or by visiting the league’s official website, www.NewYork-PennLeague.com.
The deadline to submit applications to the nearest NYPL team is June 5. Winners will be selected in mid-July.
OHSAA adjusts football start date for 2017
columbus
The Ohio High School Athletic Association has announced an adjustment to the 2017 football season calendar, which moves the official start date for practice one day earlier, back to July 31. The original practice start date had been established as Aug. 1, which matched the start date for all other OHSAA fall sports.
The change in the start date for football practice was approved so that schools can have the traditional amount of practice time before their first scrimmage the following week, which is usually a teaching scrimmage mid-week, followed by a live scrimmage that Friday or Saturday. An OHSAA Jamboree Game, which is a third scrimmage played under game conditions, is then permitted the following week.
In 2018, football practice will begin onJuly 30.

Jim Renacci (R-OH-16), introduced legislation to honor Larry Doby, the first African-American to play in the American League, with the Congressional Gold Medal for his career and contributions to the American civil rights movement.
In joining the American League, Doby effectively integrated all of professional baseball. This year is the 70th Anniversary of Doby’s debut with the Cleveland Indians in 1947.
Jackets’ Werenski’s status is day-to-day
COLUMBUS
Columbus Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella says defenseman Zach Werenski is “day to day” after leaving a game with an injury.
The 19-year-old rookie apparently hurt his shoulder Sunday night when hit by Washington’s Alex Ovechkin in the third period of the Blue Jackets’ 3-2 loss. He crumpled to the ice, then went to the dressing room and didn’t return.
Werenski, who holds Columbus franchise records for points and assists by a rookie, didn’t practice with the team Monday. Tortorella didn’t provide other details.
