Police responded to several shootings and stabbings over the weekend.
Reports said Tayquan Charlton, 19, of East Auburndale Avenue, was taken into custody about 12:05 a.m. Monday inside an apartment in the 2500 block of Tyrell Avenue on the West Side after police responded to a gunfire call there.
Reports said when officers arrived, they found no victim but did see blood, and witnesses told them the suspect went inside a nearby apartment. As police were about to enter the apartment, they were notified the victim, who had a gunshot wound to the ankle, was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital by a private vehicle.
Police got permission to search an apartment but were told by the occupant no males were inside. Reports said, however, officers saw an open door to a bedroom and found Charlton, who at first gave a false name and balled up his fists when officers tried to give him a gunshot-residue test.
Warrants were issued last week for Charlton on two counts of felonious assault in the March 24 shooting at Hillman Street and West Ravenwood Avenue on the South Side, where two teens were wounded. Charlton was arraigned on those charges Monday in municipal court plus a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm and given a bond of $85,000. He has not yet been charged with the Tyrell Avenue shooting.
In another shooting about 2:50 a.m. Sunday, police were called to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where a 22-year-old man told them he was shot outside Club Deja Vu on Market Street on the South Side.
Reports said the victim told police he was allowed inside and his girlfriend stayed in her car before he went outside and saw several women fighting. Then he was shot.
Reports said the man’s girlfriend told police she dropped him off at the club, went to a store, then got a call asking her to pick him up because he had been shot.
About 7:50 p.m. Saturday, an officer on patrol on East High and Woodside avenues on the East Side was flagged down by a man in a large crowd who said he was punched in the face and stabbed in the chest. Another man had a slash wound on his hand but did not want to get involved, reports said.
Witnesses said the suspect ran away, and police found a man matching his description, Jesse Mahone, 41, of Youngstown, behind a home in the 400 block of Woodside. He was arraigned Monday on a charge of felonious assault and given a bond of 10 percent of $20,000.
About 2:45 a.m. Saturday, police were called to a home in the 900 block of Cameron Avenue on the South Side, where they found a 26-year-old man, covered in blood, saying someone tried to rob him.
A woman in the home told police she heard struggling in the basement and saw the victim struggling with another man. She grabbed a large spoon to try to stop the man from attacking the victim, reports said.
The victim is being treated at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. Charged with felonious assault in the case is Willie Hendrix, 38, no address given. He was given a bond of $50,000 Monday during his arraignment.
Arraigned in a stabbing Friday afternoon in the first block of Livingston Street on the East Side was Kimberly Salter, 35, of Youngstown. Assistant Prosecutor Jeffrey Moliterno said Salter is accused of stabbing her ex-boyfriend. She was given a bond of 10 percent of $20,000.
Arrested on a charge of felonious assault Friday at a home in the 1900 block of Tracey Lane on the West Side was Mary Jane Boykin, 21, of Market Street in Boardman. Police were called there about 3:10 p.m. for a report of a woman throwing knives at people inside the home. Reports said she tried to stab someone inside before she was disarmed because she was arguing over a $2.50 debt.
As of late Monday, Boykin was still in the Mahoning County jail.
