The Erie County coroner reported that an autopsy completed Saturday confirmed that the remains found Friday on the shore of Presque Bay in Lake Erie are those of John Peters of Farmdale, Ohio, who was reported missing Feb. 28.
According to the autopsy, Peters, 91, died of terminal aquatic immersion, which means that he could have died either from drowning or hypothermia, 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, reported. Peters was identified by the clothing he was wearing and medical stents in his body.
His remains were found just east of where his van was discovered hanging off the edge of a dock along Lake Erie on March 1.
