Zambelli fined $5K

PITTSBURGH

A federal judge has fined Zambelli Fireworks Manufacturing Co. of New Castle, Pa., $5,000 and ordered it to forfeit $195,000 to the federal government after the company pleaded guilty to failure to report loss of explosive material, the U.S. Attorney said. The sentence was imposed on the federally licensed fireworks importer and manufacturer this week by U.S. District Court Judge David S. Cercone. In 2014, U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents found that Zambelli had about 63,000 fewer units of explosives than the total that was reflected in its inventory records.

Ex-acting chief Durkin dead at 58

AUSTINTOWN

Mark Durkin, the township’s former acting police chief, died Wednesday at the age of 58. Durkin served 20 years with the Austintown department before retiring in 2006 due to medical issues. Township Trustee Ken Carano, who served while Durkin was assistant chief, said the township lost a great policeman and educator.

“He had a great personality that could disarm people, and he was an excellent leader with the young guys who came up through the ranks in our police force,” Carano said.

Services will take place at 11 a.m. Monday at Old North Church in Canfield.
