CUMC to host caring for those with Dementia and Alzheimer’s event

Canfield United Methodist Church will host a free event for people in the community who are caring for loved ones with Dementia and Alzheimer’s. The event will take place at the church, located at 27 S. Broad Street in Canfield, on Oct. 23 from 2:30-5 p.m. The Keynote speaker will be Elizabeth Young, D.Min., STNA, author of “Sanctuary in the Midst of Alzheimer’s.” Some of the topics that will be explored are the changing roles in dementia care, and caring for the caregiver. There will also be supportive group discussion. Light refreshments will be served and RSVPs are encouraged before Oct. 21 by calling Pastor Beth McGuire on 330-533-9801, ext. 105. During the event there will be the opportunity to take part in a virtual Dementia tour. This “patented” program “simulates the effects of aging and dementia.” To participate in a dementia tour you must pre-register by calling McGuire.

Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Support Group

If you or anyone you know is interested in joining the free Youngstown Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Support Group on Facebook, do so at https://www.facebook.com/groups/176949576044725/ . The group is made of patients and families with fibromyalgia and/or chronic fatigue syndrome, and are there to support, inform and help you to deal with these serious illnesses. The group was created by John Porterfield, M.Ed., who is a Certified Holistic Life Coach and Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Wellness Coach.

Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League meeting

The next meeting of the Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will take place on Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. at Glenellen Senior Living, located at 9661 Market St. in Boardman. Members are to bring sweatshirts, hoodies or polo shirts, size L or XL for the monthly collection for local Veterans. Plans for a future wine/beer taste will be discussed. Hostesses for the meeting are Debbie Chop and Cheryl Smaldino. The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women older than 18, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. The group’s mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. Lebanese Food Festival to be Oct. 2

On Oct. 2, from 12-6 p.m., attend the annual Lebanese Food Festival in the Antioch Hall at St. Maron’s Church, located at 1555 Meridian Road in Youngstown. You can dine in or carry out. Credit cards will be accepted.

ABWA to host meeting

The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will host its Oct. 11 meeting at A La Cart in Canfield. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. with networking and dinner to follow. The menu is creamed chicken over biscuits, beef tips over noodles, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots, tossed salad, Jello, applesauce and dessert, costing $18 for the meal. The guest speaker will be Casey Malone from The Casey Malone Show, filmed in the local area, where she visits restaurants, farmers markets, businesses, etc. in the Youngstown and surrounding area. Mill Creek Chapter Awards Scholarships for 2016-17

At the August meeting of the Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association, scholarship checks were given to three students. Megan Krusel, a senior attending Penn State studying English, Scott Williams who is a senior at Youngstown State University studying Telecommunications and Mallory Allen who is attending Ohio State and studies Biomedical Engineering. The meeting took place at A La Cart in Canfield.

Chicken dinner to be Oct. 6

Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4500 Canfield Road in Canfield, is having a drive through chicken dinner on Oct. 6 from 4 p.m. until it is sold out. The cost is $8 per person and the menu will include stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and a brownie.

MCCTC flower shop opens

The student-run flower shop at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will open for its fall open house, beginning on Sept. 16 and running throughout the month of October.

A variety of fall silk floral arrangements and wreaths will be available. Fall mums are also available for sale and can be dressed for a gift or planted outside.

The shop will be decorated and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. during this time. Extended hours are available upon request.

Choose from a selection of pre-made items or purchase materials elsewhere and the students can create a beautiful piece for you. Fresh arrangements for any occasion can be made to order with a few days notice. Also they are taking orders for homecoming corsages.

East Class of 1962 to have fall dinner

East High School Class of 1962 classmates will have their fall dinner at 6 p.m. on Oct. 22 at Donavito’s in Struthers.

Farmers National Bank to host fraud seminars

With the increased breaches of data security taking place across the country, Farmers National Bank is helping its customers and the community equip themselves with financial data security education through a series of seminars. Farmers will host a Business Fraud Protection Seminar for area business leaders to discuss the insights, strategies and best practices for protecting their businesses against fraud. The seminar will feature Matt Neely. Director of Strategic Initiatives for SecureState, a global management consulting firm focused on information security. A seminar will take place on Sept. 22 from 7:30-9 a.m. at the Hampton Inn and Suites in Canfield. The seminars will cover a number of issues related to cyber security including the changing landscape and trends, business case studies, recommendations for protection and identifying risks and mitigation. GA to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

Teen Read Week features author Barry Lyga

Join the Canfield library on Oct. 19 at 9 a.m. for a special presentation by Barry Lyga, author of “After the Red Rain” and the “I Hunt Killers” series. This event is for teens.

Baby brilliant: playtime at your library

Prepare for kindergarten through play. You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten at the Canfield library at 10 a.m. on Oct. 21. Activities will vary at each program. This event is for ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

United Methodist fall festival

The 76th annual Bazaar and Fall Festival will take place at Canfield United Methodist Church, located at 27 S. Broad Street in Canfield, on Oct. 21 from 4-7 p.m. and on Oct. 22 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. There will be free admission and the event is open to all. The event will feature Trash and Treasure items (Books, CDs, DVDs, Clothing, Housewares, Furniture, Toys, Misc.,), handcrafted gifts and decorations, fresh baked goods, coleslaw, peanut brittle and a silent auction. Proceeds to benefit Operation Blessing, Canfield Care Net, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, CUMC Pre-School and various community needs.

Baby brilliant ASL: bonding with babies, books and signs

Come and learn how to use American Sign Language (ASL) with your child through rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Canfield library at 10 a.m. on Oct. 27. Learn easy corresponding signs to learn and share with your little ones. Babies, ages 6-23 months must be accompanied with an adult.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Canfield library at 10 a.m. on every Thursday in October. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s

Join the Canfield library every Tuesday in October at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Fun time for 4’s and 5’s

Join the Canfield library on Oct. 11 at 11:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes and finger plays, and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Decorate a pumpkin for Halloween

Join the Canfield library on Oct. 22 at 11 a.m. to create your own Jack-o-Lantern. They will provide pumpkins, paint, jewels and other pretty/spooky stuff with which to decorate. No carving will be involved. Light refreshments will be served. This event is for the family. Space is limited so register to reserve your pumpkin.

Gotta move story time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in October at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Grab and go craft

Make a craft to take home at the Canfield library during library hours in October. This is for children of all ages.

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Canfield library on Oct. 8 at 2:30 p.m. and Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This will be for children, ages 6 and up.

STEAM Saturday: fabulous fossils

Learn about fossils and do some fossil art at the Canfield library on Oct. 15 at 11 a.m. This event is for grades 4-6.

Take a guess

Guess the number of items in the jar at the Canfield library during library hours in October. Closest guess wins a small prize.

Tales to tails

Sign up to read aloud to a registered therapy dog at the Canfield library on Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome. This event helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Each session is 15 minutes. Bring a book of your choice. This event is for children grades K and up. Dogs are provided by K9’s for Compassion, a community partner of Pet Partners. Sign up required; call 330-744-8636.

TAB (Teen Advisory Board) Canfield

Join the Canfield library’s Teen Advisory Board (TAB) and get to know the new Canfield library on Oct. 20 at 4 p.m., take a look at some new teen books and share ideas. A snack will be provided.

Teen Tuesdays - skull candy

Come make and decorate skulls of all types at the Canfield library on Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. You will be using clay, chocolate, plaster of Paris and recycled newspapers to make, paint, decorate and have fun with skulls. Light snacks will be served.

The eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest

Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. Local libraries are sponsoring the eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. The format of the writing contest this year is a six word memoir. A Six-Word Memoir Æ is the story of your life—some part of it or all of it—told in exactly six words. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. Eligibility: All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County. Contest runs from Oct. 1-31.

Open mic night and poetry slam

Do you have a poem or short story that you would like to share? Come to the Canfield library on Oct. 13 at 6:30 p.m. for open mic night. Tea will be served between performances. This event is for teens and adults.

Coloring for grown-ups

Come join the Canfield library on Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. and Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m. and tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze: coloring for grown-ups. Colored pencils and markers will be provided along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This program is for teens and adults only.

DIY Halloween luminary

Join Canfield library’s new monthly book club on Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss titles chosen “off the shelves” of the Canfield library’s new Book Club room. October’s selection is “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr. This is for adults.

Operation Blessing has new policy

The end-of-the-year holidays are almost here. In order to receive a large roasting chicken on distribution days in November and December, you must be a registered client with Operation Blessing. In addition, as of May of 2016, a new rule has been put into place: You must be a registered client to be able to select Christmas presents for your children and to receive a ham at Easter. Oct. 20 will be your last chance to register. Distribution is from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Canfield Presbyterian Church. You will need to bring the following, a State I.D. and proof of 2016 income for all contributing adults. If you have children, you will need either birth certificates or medical cards for each child.

America’s Schoolmaster exhibit

The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
