The Boardman United Methodist Church, located at 6809 Market Street, will host a ham loaf sale on Nov. 1 from 12:30 p.m. until it is sold out. The loaves will be sold in packages of 6 for $15. There will be no preorders.

Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Support Group

If you or anyone you know is interested in joining the free Youngstown Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Support Group on Facebook, do so at https://www.facebook.com/groups/176949576044725/ . The group is made of patients and families with fibromyalgia and/or chronic fatigue syndrome, and are there to support, inform and help you to deal with these serious illnesses. The group was created by John Porterfield, M.Ed., who is a Certified Holistic Life Coach and Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Wellness Coach.

Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League meeting

The next meeting of the Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will take place on Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. at Glenellen Senior Living, located at 9661 Market St. in Boardman. Members are to bring sweatshirts, hoodies or polo shirts, size L or XL for the monthly collection for local Veterans. Plans for a future wine/beer taste will be discussed. Hostesses for the meeting are Debbie Chop and Cheryl Smaldino. The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women older than 18, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. The group’s mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. ABWA to host meeting

The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will host its Oct. 11 meeting at A La Cart in Canfield. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. with networking and dinner to follow. The menu is creamed chicken over biscuits, beef tips over noodles, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots, tossed salad, Jello, applesauce and dessert, costing $18 for the meal. The guest speaker will be Casey Malone from The Casey Malone Show, filmed in the local area, where she visits restaurants, farmers markets, businesses, etc. in the Youngstown and surrounding area. Lebanese Food Festival to be Oct. 2

On Oct. 2, from 12-6 p.m., attend the annual Lebanese Food Festival in the Antioch Hall at St. Maron’s Church, located at 1555 Meridian Road in Youngstown. You can dine in or carry out. Credit cards will be accepted.

Rotary to host Oktoberfest

The sights and sounds of fall come alive on Oct. 2 in Boardman Park as the Boardman Rotary puts on its 40th Annual Oktoberfestival. The first Oktoberfestival was set around St. James Church in the Park with 20 vendors at that event. There will be more than 150 vendors with 20 or more food concessions for this year’s show. All of the proceeds from this event go right back in to the local community. In front of the bocce court will be the Boardman Rotary tent. Visit the tent to support Project Warm and Coats for Kids. Rotary will be selling water and raffle tickets for a chance to win an overnight stay at The Lodge at Geneva Lake complete with a wine tour. All the proceeds for the program will be to provide children in the Boardman School System with a brand new coat, hat and gloves for winter. A $20 donation will buy a coat for a child. There will be limited on-site parking at Boardman Park and patrons are encouraged to use the free shuttle bus service from The Heart Center on Southern Boulevard. It will bring you to the Park, drop you off right at the entrance and bring you back to your cars. The Rotary Club of Boardman is an organization of business and professional leaders who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace. Boardman Rotary is a non-profit community organization. The cost to enter Oktoberfestival is a $3 donation. Rotary has provided more than $500,000 in support to the local community through this event.

East Class of 1962 to have fall dinner

East High School Class of 1962 classmates will have their fall dinner at 6 p.m. on Oct. 22 at Donavito’s in Struthers.

UFO’s: The truth is out there

Enjoy this presentation on Oct. 29 at 3:30 p.m. at the Boardman library on UFO’s from a historical perspective with emphasis on the best investigated cases. Chris Parsons of the Mutual UFO Network, one of the oldest and largest civilian UFO-investigative organizations in the United States, will explain why many believe that the truth is out there. This event is for teens and adults.

MCCTC flower shop opens

The student-run flower shop at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will open for its fall open house, beginning on Sept. 16 and running throughout the month of October. A variety of fall silk floral arrangements and wreaths will be available. Fall mums are also available for sale and can be dressed for a gift or planted outside. The shop will be decorated and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. during this time. Extended hours are available upon request. Choose from a selection of pre-made items or purchase materials elsewhere and the students can create a beautiful piece for you. Fresh arrangements for any occasion can be made to order with a few days notice. Also they are taking orders for homecoming corsages.

Local church to host rummage sale and food fair

There will be a rummage sale and food fair at Trinity Fellowship Church in Boardman on Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Mill Creek Chapter Awards Scholarships

At the August meeting of the Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association, scholarship checks were given to three students. Megan Krusel, a senior attending Penn State studying English, Scott Williams who is a senior at Youngstown State University studying Telecommunications and Mallory Allen who is attending Ohio State and studies Biomedical Engineering. The meeting took place at A La Cart in Canfield.

GA to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group to meet

The Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group will meet from 6-7 p.m. on Oct. 11 in the Azalea Room of St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, located at 8401 Market Street. The Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group is a member of the United Ostomy Association of America Inc. (UOAA), a national network for bowel and urinary diversion support groups in the United States. Sponsored by Mercy Health – Youngstown, meetings of the Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group take place the second Tuesday of each month with meeting places alternating between Humility House and St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital. Meetings are open to the public, refreshments are provided and parking is free.

BUMC to host fall sale

Boardman United Methodist Church will host a fall Trash and Treasure Sale at the church, located at 6809 Market Street, on Oct. 5 and 6 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Oct. 6 will be bargain-bag day. Lunch, pastries and beverages will be available.

Recording your personal history

Join the Boardman library on Oct. 12 at 6:30 p.m. for the first of its workshops about creating a memoir of your personal recollections to pass on to your family’s future generations. Based on Bob Greene’s book, “To Our Children’s Children,” you will discuss a variety of subjects you may wish to consider for inclusion, how to organize your project and methods to use for recording and preserving your personal history. Attend one, two or all three workshops. Second and third workshops are at Boardman on Nov. 15 and Dec. 6. Projects can be completed in time for holiday gift giving. Playtime at your library

Prepare for kindergarten through play. You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten at the Boardman library at 10 a.m. on Oct. 12. Activities will vary at each program. This is for ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Boardman library at 10 a.m. on every Tuesday in October. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s

Join the Boardman library every Wednesday in October at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Clowning around with Joe Sullivan, Jocko the Clown

Stop, watch and laugh at the antics of “Jocko the Clown.” Come have fun and learn about clowning, magic, puppetry and books at the Boardman library on Oct. 18 at 6:30 p.m. A family program for all ages will last one hour and close with a freeze pop treat.

Read to some bunny

Come be a book buddy and read to a licensed therapy rabbit at the Boardman library on Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. School-age children are welcome to sit and read out loud for 20 minutes.

Spooktacular Halloween fun

Join the Boardman library on Oct. 25 at 6:30 p.m. for a story, games, a craft and a snack for this holiday program. This will be for school-age children.

Teen read week bingo

Do you have what it takes to celebrate Teen Read Week by doing fun and unusual reading tasks throughout the month of October? Turn in your completed Bingo sheet and get entered for a drawing of a prize at the Boardman library during library hours in October. This event is for teens entering grades 7-12.

TAB (Teen Advisory Board) Boardman

Check out the monthly TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meeting. They meet on the first Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library. Help plan and support teen activities at the library. Meet new people and have fun. Newcomers are always welcome. This month’s meeting will be on Oct. 5 at 6:30 p.m.

The eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest

Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. Local libraries are sponsoring the eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. The format of the writing contest this year is a six word memoir. A Six-Word Memoir Æ is the story of your life — some part of it or all of it — told in exactly six words. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. Eligibility: All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County. The contest runs from Oct. 1-31.

Night owl story time

There will be an evening story time for children ages 3-5 at the Boardman library on Oct. 4 and 11 at 6:30 p.m. Each child must be accompanied by an adult in this 30-minute program featuring finger plays, stories and a craft activity. Check into chess

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Boardman library on Oct. 8 at 10 a.m. Legos will be provided. This will be for children, ages 6 and up.

It’s all about yarn

Bring in your crochet, knitting, plastic canvas or “anything with yarn” project and learn from one another at the Boardman library on Oct. 31 at 11 a.m. Participants are encouraged to bring all yarn UFOs (unfinished objects). This event is for adults.

I Read YA! book club

This event is for adult fans of Young Adult literature of all ages. Talk about why you like YA, and read and discuss the latest book at the Boardman library on Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m. This month they will be discussing “With Malice” by Eileen Cook.

Reader’s Choice book club

You will discuss “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen. Share your favorite books and find out what new ones are being published at the Boardman library on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. You will preview November’s book, “Destiny of the Republic” by Candice Millard.

America’s Schoolmaster exhibit

The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
