UPDATE | I-80 east at Salt Springs Road is now open

LIBERTY — The Ohio Department of Transportation has announced that I-80 east at Salt Springs Road is now open.

The road became blocked in both lanes after a tanker truck flipped over in the eastbound lane near the state Route 711 south ramp at about 6:10 a.m.

Fire Chief Gus Birch said construction on both Interstate 80 ramps that run-through the township hampered efforts this morning to respond to the large tanker fire. Birch said a truck from Hubbard was actually first on the scene.

Three vehicles were destroyed. There were no serious injuries. Birch said it took "hours" to get the fire under control.

Sources told The Vindicator that workers had to fix the road which was severely damaged by the fire. A grinder was brought to the scene to remove the damaged pavement prior to that patch of I-80 getting repaved.

Youngstown police also responded to several minor accidents by cars that were diverted off the freeway onto city streets nearby.
