Governor to meet with kneeling players
lincoln, neb.
Gov. Pete Ricketts has agreed to meet next week with one of the Nebraska football players he criticized for kneeling during the national anthem at the Cornhuskers’ most recent game.
Michael Rose-Ivey and two teammates each took a knee before last Saturday’s game at Northwestern as a protest against police brutality and racial injustice.
Ricketts spokesman Taylor Gage said Wednesday a day for the meeting had not been set but that it would be held next week, at Rose-Ivey’s request, so it doesn’t interfere with football game preparation. The Cornhuskers don’t have a game on Oct. 8.
After Ricketts called the act “disgraceful” and “disrespectful” on his radio show Monday, Rose-Ivey tweeted at Ricketts that he would like to discuss the issue with him.
Ricketts on Tuesday night responded on Twitter: “Thanks for reaching out. Direct message me your information, and we will get something set up right away!”
Also Tuesday, Rose-Ivey and teammates Mohamed Barry and DaiShon Neal were criticized by two university regents, but received support from the university president Hank Bounds.
Regent Hal Daub of Omaha and Jim Pillen of Columbus said the anthem protest was in poor judgment.

Dismissal requested in ex-player rape case
auburn, ala.
A woman who accused former Auburn tight end Landon Rice of rape has asked a judge to dismiss a protective order against him without prejudice.
The woman filed the request in Lee County Circuit Court on Wednesday.
A hearing on a judge’s temporary protective order is scheduled for Oct. 4. The filing said Rice has not attempted to contact the woman directly or indirectly since the order was issued on Sept. 15 and that Rice’s lawyers have said he would not attend any university events or come onto the campus.
Auburn has dismissed the freshman from the team. Rice hasn’t been charged.

Ducks hold team meeting after losses
EUGENE, ORE.
Oregon players held a team meeting without their coaches this week following back-to-back losses.
Veteran players addressed their teammates on a practice field Monday, two days after the Ducks’ 41-38 loss at home to Colorado. The Buffaloes had not defeated Oregon since joining the Pac-12 in 2011.
“Those kind of things are almost always positive in the end, good in the end” coach Mark Helfrich said, referring to the players’ meeting during his weekly news conference. “And like a lot of things, there are words, and then there are actions and commitments that come out of things.”
Oregon, which played in the national championship game following both the 2010 and 2014 seasons and which has won at least nine games in each of the last nine seasons, was ranked No. 24 in the preseason and climbed to No. 22 with wins against UC Davis and Idaho State.
But the Ducks fell 35-32 on the road to Nebraska before last weekend’s loss to the Buffaloes. It is the first time in nine seasons that Oregon has dropped consecutive regular-season games.

Offensive lineman arrested for battery
west lafayette, ind.
Purdue offensive lineman Martesse Patterson was arrested Wednesday and charged with a felony count of battery causing serious bodily injury.
According to online court documents, bail was set at $1,000 cash with a $10,000 surety. A no-contact order also was issued.
The sophomore started at left tackle in Purdue’s first two games but was held out of last week’s game because of “personal issues.”
Alex Hilger claims Patterson took property out of his bedroom on Sept. 7. Hilger said when he asked for it back, Patterson punched him in the face. According to a probable cause affidavit , a no-contact order has been issued.
Purdue coach Darrell Hazell issued a statement saying he was aware of the incident and would let the legal process work before making any additional comment.
