AUSTINTOWN

Mike Dockry, Austintown Township administrator, estimated there will be three more days of laying asphalt before the resurfacing project will be completed.

The project includes paving more than 20,000 feet of Austintown roads

In July, trustees, in conjunction with Boardman and Canfield townships, awarded a $737,295 contract to R.T. Vernal Paving & Excavating Co. of North Lima to pave select roads.

The township will pay up to $400,000 for its portion of the paving.

“Because we lost $1.4 million from the state of Ohio we have to pick and choose the worst of the worst to be paved,” said Trustee Ken Carano.

Carano was referring to losses localities are experiencing from state and federal funding cuts.

Zoning Inspector Darren Crivelli said another project for the township will be delayed – a new Sheetz building coming to North Canfield-Niles Road.

“The engineers [from Sabatine BK Development] are indicating it will be a 2017 project,” Crivelli said.

The building will replace an old car wash and a former fast-food restaurant on North Canfield-Niles Road corner.

In other news, Park Supervisor Todd Shaffer said the splash pad will be closing this week.

The swings, pickleball court and tennis courts will be open a little later into the fall season.

Carano reminded the public that because the Austintown Township satellite park Wedgewood Park, 1675 Lancaster Drive, is closed, passage on the premises is trespassing and will be criminally pursued.
