WARREN

A free community outreach program, which includes free health screenings for hearing, optical, balance, blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose and bone density, will take place from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 5 at Warren SCOPE, 220 W. Market St.

Numerous agencies serving the Trumbull County area will offer information and free cleaning and personal products, and there will be a scavenger hunt. For information, call 330-399-8846.

Osteoporosis talk

John V. Gentile, DO, a specialist in orthopaedic trauma care at Mercy Health – St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, will talk about osteoporosis, a disease that causes bones to become weak, at a Mercy Health Women in Touch event from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 4 at The Avalon Inn and Resort, 9519 E. Market St., Howland, and Oct. 11 at Mr. Anthony’s, 744 South Ave., Boardman.

‘Healthy Eating for You’

A series of three weekly “Healthy Eating for You” presentations are offered from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Wednesdays beginning Oct. 12 in the Warren Room at St. Joseph Warren Hospital, 667 Eastland Ave. S.E.

Weekly topics will be “Portion control,” Oct. 12; “Label Reading,” Oct. 19; and “Eating Mindfulness,” Oct. 26.

Registered dietitian and community educator Bridget Lackey will lead the informational discussions and answer questions in the presentation, which is free and open to the public and provided by Mercy Health – Youngstown. Reservations are appreciated. Call 330-480-3070. Parking is free.

Support group meeting

The Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group will meet from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 11 in the Azalea Room at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, 8401 Market St.

Heart failure class

Mercy Health – Youngstown will conduct a Heart Failure 101 class from 1 to 2 p.m. Oct. 18 at St. Joseph Wellness Center, St. Joseph Warren Hospital, 667 Eastland Ave. S.E.

The class is free to patients and families dealing with congestive heart failure. Call 330-841-4327 to register. The Wellness Center is located near the B entrance on the north side of the hospital.

Doctor news from Akron Children’s

AKRON

Doctor Michael Kohrman, M.D., has been named director of neurology at Akron Children’s Hospital,and pediatric neurologist Dr. Ian Rossman, M.D., Ph.D, has also joined the hospital staff.

Dr. Kohrman came to Akron Children’s from the University of Chicago, where he has served as director of the pediatric epilepsy program and director of pediatric clinical neurophysiology at the University of Chicago Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Rossman earned his medical degree from Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center in New Brunswick, N.J., where he also completed his pediatric residency. He completed a fellowship in pediatric neurology at the Cleveland Clinic and a fellowship in neuroimmunology at the Cleveland Clinic’s Mellen Center for Multiple Sclerosis Treatment and Research.
