South Side shooting critically injures man

YOUNGSTOWN

A man was critically injured in a shooting Sunday night on the South Side.

According to police, the man was shot in the abdomen in a house in the 100 block of East Midlothian Boulevard just east of Southern Boulevard.

He was transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital where he was listed in critical condition late Sunday night.

The shooting occurred about 8 p.m., and police had cleared the scene one hour later.

There are no suspects, a witness said.

Crash in Boardman

BOARDMAN

A vehicle crashed into a utility pole about 8 p.m. at the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Shields Road, injuring the driver and a passenger.

Boardman police said the passengers in the vehicle were not seriously injured but that the intersection would be closed for several hours while crews replaced the pole.

Fair officers elected

CORTLAND

At the recent reorganization meeting of the Trumbull County Fair Board, the following officers were chosen:

Harry “Bud” Rodgers, Fowler, president; Jack Lammers, Hartford, first vice president; Kim Carnivale, Cortland, second vice president; Don Nelson, Southington, treasurer; and Michele Smith, Southington, secretary.

Each will serve a one-year term.

The board will have a special meeting at 7 p.m. Oct. 6 to vote on a contractor for the new restroom. All contract bids are due by noon Wednesday. Bids will be opened by the architect.

Pumpkin weigh-off

CANFIELD

The Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers will host the 22nd annual giant pumpkin weigh-off from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 8 at Parks Garden Center, 9010 state Route 62.

Records could be broken at this year’s weigh-off. Prize money this year will exceed $25,000 for the heaviest categories of giant pumpkin, watermelon, tomato, and Halloween-themed pumpkin. Also included are widest sunflower head and longest gourd.

The winner of heaviest giant pumpkin will be awarded $5,000.

Participants wishing to enter any of the categories need to have their entry at the garden center by 9 a.m. Exhibits will remain on display until 4 p.m.

There is no admission charge, and a lunch stand will be available. The Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers is comprised of 250 members.

Road closing

BELOIT

State Route 14 between Calla and West Middletown Roads will be closed next Monday to Oct. 7 for a culvert replacement, the Ohio Department of Transportation announced. The detour will be U.S. Route 224 to state Route 534.
