Mount Union 49, Baldwin-Wallce 7

BEREA

Freshman QB Luke Poorman played the first half and completed 6 of 11 passes for 74 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for the Purple Raiders. The running game was led by senior BJ Mitchell who gained a career-high 259 yards on 32 attempts with two touchdowns. The receivvers were led by senior Tim Kennedy with four catches for 33 yards and a TD. On defense, junior Elijah Berry made six tackles. For the Yellow Jackets, senior Bryon Cook caught four passes for 60 yards and a touchdown. Senior quarterback Robbie Plagens (completed 9 of 14 passes for 121 yards with a touchdown and one interception.

Saint Vincent 57, Grove City 32

LATROBE, PA.

Saint Vincent posted a 20-0 run in the third quarter to pull away. Freshman running back Wesley Schools led Grove City by rushing for a career-high 236 yards and three touchdowns on 39 carries. Schools’ second touchdown came on a 56-yard with 13:30 left in the third quarter and brought Grove City to within 24-22. Saint Vincent quarterback Derek Stewart threw touchdown passes of 71 and two yards, respective to D.J. Oceant-Kelly in the second quarter that pushed the Bearcats’ lead to 21-6. Grove City answered quickly, however, as freshman wide receiver Nick Ponikvar caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Brett Laffoon with 2:24 remaining in the first half. Laffoon finished 18 of 35 for 198 yards. Ponikvar caught five passes for 60 yards.

DePauw 66, Hiram 17

GREENCASTLE, IND.

Junior Joshua Philander had a 76-yard touchdown reception, but the Hiram College football team fell to DePauw (Ind.). The Terriers fall to 1-2 on the season and 1-1 in NCAC play, while the Tigers remain undefeated at 3-0, 2-0. Philander finished the game with 142 yards receiving. His 76-yard reception was a season-best and a new career-high. His second-longest reception came during the 2014 season against Kenyon (74). Senior Domenic Paolo completed 16 passes on 32 attempts for 282 yards and one touchdown. Senior Jacob Luc had four receptions for 42 yards and senior Richie Watson added 41 receiving yards on three attempts. Junior Danny Robinson carried 11 times for 42 yards. Senior Brandon Gros led the Terriers in tackles with 11 (nine solo, two assists). Senior D.D. Fleetion added seven tackles (five solo, two assists), with one of them coming for a loss.

Westminster 38, Bethany 9

BETHANY, W.VA.

The Westminster College football team won over Bethany College on the road in its Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) opener. Westminster improved to 3-0 on the season, its best start since 1997. The Bison dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference. Junior Paul Columbo scored on Westminster’s first drive of the game with a six-yard run. The Titans successfully converted on the two-point conversion with a pass to junior Dylan Goff and led 8-0 with 12:10 on the clock. Westminster extended its lead in the second quarter after Columbo found sophomore Bryson Paulinellie for a one-handed 12-yard touchdown catch. The Titans missed the extra point and led 14-0 with 10:03 on the clock. Bethany got on the board following a field goal by Chris Ray with 7:09 remaining in the half, cutting Westminster’s lead to 14-3.

Geneva 35, Thiel 27

BEAVER FALLS, PA.

The Thiel Tomcats were unable to spoil the Geneva Golden Tornadoes’ homecoming as they dropped a Presidents’ Athletic Conference decision. Trailing 35-20 entering the fourth quarter, the Tomcats pieced together a 13-play drive that covered 80 yards in a little more than four minutes and ended with a six-yard touchdown run by quarterback Ryan Radke. Radke’s score, along with Chris Rosales’ extra point, sliced Geneva’s lead down to eight points. Unfortunately, Thiel would get no closer. After forcing Geneva to go three-and-out on the ensuing drive, Thiel started their final drive of the game at their own 46-yard line with 9:03 remaining in regulation. The Tomcats picked up a pair of first downs on the drive and got the ball down to the 23-yard line, but Radke’s fourth-down throw for DeShawon Bracy fell incomplete and the Golden Tornadoes went on to run out the final 5:12 of the fourth quarter.
