Doctorate

Michael W. Hudoba, son of Dr. Russell and Marilyn Hudoba, recently received his doctorate in mechnical engineering with a specialty in nanoengineering and biological design from Ohio State University.

Hudoba completed a dissertation titled “Force Sensing Applications of DNA Origami Nanodevices” in August. He was a first-place recipient of the OSU Haye’s Graduate Research Forum and was named Graduate Teaching Assistant of the Year in the department of Mechanical Engineering. He graduated from Canfield High School as valedictorian in 2005. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 2009 and his master’s degree in 2011 from OSU.

Hudoba has begun working as a faculty professor at Otterbein University in Westerville in the university’s new engineering department, where he teaches engineering and is helping to develop the curriculum for future students.

HONORS

Antonette M. Scharsu of Hubbard, a senior majoring in politics and international relations and Russian language, is the latest Youngstown State University student to win the prestigious Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad.

Scharsu is studying in St. Petersburg, Russia, this fall semester.

She is the 18th YSU student since 2012 to be selected a Gilman scholar. In all, YSU Gilman scholars have received nearly $60,000 in scholarships and studied in Russia, Thailand, Spain, India, China, United Kingdom, Turkey, South Korea, Cyprus, Germany, Dominican Republic and Japan. This past summer, YSU student Jasmyne Huckaba studied in Chiang Mai, Thailand, as a Gilman scholar. Scharsu, who graduated from Hubbard High School in 2013, works at the Youngstown Country Club, is a member of Simply Slavic and the Saxon Club and is an active volunteer at New Lease on Life Animal Shelter in Struthers.

The daughter of Ray and Adele Scharsu, she speaks Russian, Spanish and English, as well as American Sign Language, and aspires for a career in federal law enforcement. The scholarship is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV’s executive director, Dr. Wayde Killmeyer, was selected by the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators as the recipient of the 2016 Award for Service to the Profession.

This award is given annually to a school system leader who demonstrates commitment to excellence as evidenced through notable service to the profession. This award will be presented to Dr. Killmeyer at the annual PASA-PSBA School Leadership Conference in Hershey, Pa., in October.

Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV is one of 29 intermediate units in Pennsylvania and provides services to the 27 school districts in Butler, Lawrence, and Mercer counties. Killmeyer has served as the executive director of MIU IV since 2013 in addition to providing more than 100 programs and services requested by area school districts.

Killmeyer earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer science from the University of Pittsburgh; his master’s degree in English literature from the University of Maryland; and his master’s degree in secondary mathematics education from Slippery Rock University. He earned his doctorate in educational leadership at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.
