Mill Creek MetroParks is thanking its users after they helped identify a suspect who police believe drew anti-Semitic graffiti throughout the park.

“We are incredibly thankful for park patrons, who not only helped us get the graffiti removed, but the witness who helped us identify and ultimately arrest the suspect,” Lori Shandor, MetroParks development director, said.

Charged in the incidents that occurred over the last week is Scott Spencer, 25, whose listed address in court records is on Hood Drive in Canfield. He is charged withethnic intimidation, a fifth-degree felony, and misdemeanor criminal mischief.

Park users reported seeing anti-Semitic graffiti at various park locations in the past week, the park reported.

“They were anti-Semitic messages that varied. Some used profanity, some referenced past events, both internationally and here in the U.S.,” said Shandor. “They were pretty harsh.”

The chalk messages popped up on roads, pathways and on a few of the park’s boat docks.

MetroParks police were able to identify Spencer after someone noticed that a previously unblemished spot had graffiti on it when they went past it a second time. They saw a suspect leaving the area, and notified police.

Police served Spencer with an arrest warrant Thursday, and he is scheduled to appear in Mahoning County Area Court in Boardman on Tuesday.
