POLICE CALLS

A summary of recent criminal activity in Poland and Boardman townships:

POLAND

Sept. 17

Theft: Two pieces of jewelry worth a total of $30,000 were stolen from a residence in the 2100 block of Renwick Drive.

Drugs: Police on Quarry Road issued a minor-misdemeanor citation charging 39-year-old Carlos C. Burgos Jr. of Division Street, Youngstown, with having a small amount of suspected marijuana.

Sept. 18

Breaking and entering: Someone broke into a residence in the 2700 block of East Western Reserve Road, though it was undetermined if anything had been taken.

Criminal damaging: A mailbox was pushed off its foundation at a home in the 5400 block of Clingan Road.

Sept. 19

Theft: A man discovered about $200 worth of dietary supplement pills missing from his Four Seasons Trail residence.

BOARDMAN

Sept. 17

Breaking and entering: A garage to a home in the 100 block of Shadyside Drive was entered, though it appeared nothing had been disturbed or stolen.

Theft: A $300 digital camera was removed from a vehicle in the 4900 block of Glenwood Avenue.

Criminal damaging: A woman returned to her Southern Boulevard residence and noticed someone had destroyed some vegetables in her garden and sprayed others, ruining them.

Theft: A township man reported his wallet stolen while at a Southern Park Mall restaurant.

Arrest: Authorities responding to a fight at a Market Street motel charged Nathan M. Hersman of Market, Boardman, with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and obstructing official business after alleging the intoxicated 27-year-old Hersman on several occasions caused a disturbance, yelled obscenities and refused to quiet down. He also failed to cooperate and struggled with officers, they alleged.

Identity theft: A Uhrichsville, Ohio, man found out someone without authorization had opened a credit-card account with his personal information and made $2,500 worth of such charges at a Southern Park Mall store.

Theft: Three signs were stolen from a condominium association in the 900 block of Auburn Hills Drive.

Arrest: Police near South Avenue pulled over and charged 28-year-old Winfield S. Dray of Helena Avenue, Youngstown, with operating a vehicle impaired after reporting he had a 0.191 blood-alcohol count.

Theft: Kristi L. Coxson, 33, of Chestnut Avenue, Warren, was picked up at Southern Park Mall and charged in a Sept. 3 shoplifting situation in which about $50 worth of assorted merchandise was stolen from the J.C. Penney store in the mall.

Possible theft: An Austintown woman told police that while at a Glenwood Avenue church, she realized her father’s World War II pilot identification bracelet had been lost or stolen.

Arrest: While investigating a suspicious vehicle near a Doral Drive big-box store at night, officers charged a 16-year-old Boardman girl with obstructing official business when, they said, she provided a false name and age.

Theft: A Cleveland woman noticed about $200 missing from her car while in the 500 block of West Glen Drive.

Theft: Angela M. Housteau, 50, of Forest Ridge Drive, Boardman, was charged in the theft of four packages of USB cords valued at $84 from Target, 417 Boardman-Poland Road.

Sept. 18

Domestic violence: Timothy P. Powers, 51, of Cathy Ann Drive, Boardman, faced two misdemeanor domestic-violence counts after his brother alleged Powers had twice struck him. Also, Powers’ father alleged his son had twice struck his head, including when the accuser tried to intervene between the brothers.

Employee theft/theft: Authorities took custody of Shelly A. Testa, 38, of Fourth Street, Struthers, and 37-year-old Jennifer L. Phelps, also of Fourth Street, Struthers, surrendered on a theft charge after about $27 worth of items had been stolen from Marc’s, 7121 Tiffany Blvd. Testa and Phelps, who worked at the grocery store, were accused of placing “paid” stickers on the products without scanning them.

Theft: A man and a woman reportedly stole merchandise from Ulta Beauty, 403 Boardman-Poland Road, and Dick’s Sporting Goods, 550 Boardman-Poland Road.

Theft: A Market Street man alleged his stepsister had stolen an iPhone charger, two wristwatches and a pair of shoes from his apartment.

Harassment: A township woman told officers her 15-year-old son had received threatening messages on his Instagram account.

Theft: A Squirrel Hill Drive man reported two 32-inch TVs stolen from his daughter’s bedroom.

Theft by deception: John C. Houser Jr., 31, of Volney Road, Youngstown, faced a fourth-degree felony theft-by-deception charge, and 35-year-old Frank D. Hosey of McGuffey Road, Youngstown, was charged with theft after $303 worth of property, including ammunition, was stolen from Walmart, 1300 Doral Drive. Houser and Hosey, who also was wanted on a warrant, then returned the items for $105, a report said.

Harassment: A Prestwick Drive woman said she received the latest in a series of such calls.

Theft: Wanda M. Duck, 48, of East Delason Avenue, Youngstown, was charged with stealing $232 worth of groceries from Marc’s and given a criminal-trespassing warning.

Theft: Authorities stopped a U-Haul truck near Southern Boulevard before charging 42-year-old Tyrone J. Thomas with a third-degree felony count of failing to comply with police and one misdemeanor count each of obstructing official business and theft. Thomas, of Chestnut Street Southeast, Warren, admitted having led officers on an earlier car chase; he also was accused of stealing 18 articles of clothing from the J.C. Penney store the day before, a report stated.

Sept. 19

Theft: A man reportedly left Smokey Bones Bar & Fire Grill, 6651 South Ave., without paying his $85 food bill.

Menacing/criminal mischief: A Southern Boulevard woman reported a neighbor had threatened her and that someone intentionally swept glass into her parking space.

Theft by deception: The owner of a Market Street jewelry store told police a man had used a credit card in a fraudulent manner in an effort to buy a $525 necklace.

Sept. 20

Arrest: After responding to a report of someone asleep in a vehicle in a U.S. Route 224 fast-food restaurant’s drive-through, police charged Christopher A. Troisi, 47, of Forest Park Place, Boardman, with operating a vehicle impaired.

Assault: A Struthers man alleged a woman had slapped his face while he was in front of a home in the 1800 block of Mathews Road.

Breaking and entering: A woman told police she awoke to find two men in her Shields Road apartment who apparently tried to overturn her mattress and who had opened cabinets in her kitchen before leaving in a silver and black two-door vehicle.

Animal cruelty: While conducting a welfare check in the 4000 block of South Avenue, an officer reported discovering roughly 10 cats, some of which were underweight or emaciated, living in deplorable conditions.

Breaking and entering: Someone broke into a garage belonging to Shaffer Concrete LLC, 5785 Southern Blvd., and took numerous tools and other items. The estimated loss was $22,270.

Theft: A Tam-o-Shanter Drive man discovered miscellaneous silver coins and bars missing from his home.

Theft: The landlord of a residence in the 70 block of Erskine Avenue alleged a tenant had stolen a stove and a refrigerator from the home.

Arrest: Officers responded to a car crash near Indianola Road and Southern Boulevard before charging 32-year-old Ryan S. Carnahan of North Belle Vista Avenue, Youngstown, with operating a vehicle impaired and having no operator’s license.

Theft: Paula M. Akin, 19, of Pasadena Avenue, Youngstown, along with two city girls, 15 and 17, was charged with stealing three handbags, two pairs of jeans and other merchandise from Walmart.

Criminal damaging: A woman alleged her former boyfriend had smashed her $600 iPhone as she visited a friend in the 100 block of Homestead Drive.

Vandalism: Someone used a BB gun to shoot a hole through a large front window to a business in the 900 block of East Midlothian Boulevard and do about $1,500 in damage.

Arrest: Police at the Mahoning County jail arrested 28-year-old Anthony L. Riddle on a warrant charging him with violating a protection order. On Aug. 17, Riddle, of Mumford Drive, Youngstown, was with a woman at a township movie theater in violation of the order, a report stated.

Employee theft: Police at the Mahoning County jail phone booked Mark R. Scott of North Navarre Avenue, Youngstown, on a theft charge. Last month, a manager with Little Caesar’s Pizza, 68 Boardman-Poland Road, alleged Scott, 26, had stolen undisclosed sums of money from a register on multiple occasions.

Theft: A woman noticed $2 and a coin purse had been removed from her vehicle while she was in the 5800 block of Tippecanoe Road.

Sept. 21

Assault/criminal damaging: Authorities responded to a fight between three men at a South Avenue lounge, where a wooden pool cue sustained $100 in damage in the melee.
