MCCTC flower shop opens

The student-run flower shop at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will open for its fall open house, beginning on Sept. 16 and running throughout the month of October. A variety of fall silk floral arrangements and wreaths will be available. Fall mums are also available for sale and can be dressed for a gift or planted outside.The shop will be decorated and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. during this time. Extended hours are available upon request.Choose from a selection of pre-made items or purchase materials elsewhere and the students can create a beautiful piece for you. Fresh arrangements for any occasion can be made to order with a few days notice. Also they are taking orders for homecoming corsages.

East Class of 1962 to have fall dinner

East High School Class of 1962 classmates will have their fall dinner at 6 p.m. on Oct. 22 at Donavito’s in Struthers.

GA to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.

Poland Historical Society’s fall fundraiser

Poland Historical Society’s fall fundraiser will take place on Oct. 22. It will feature a trip to the Western Reserve Historical Society and the Cleveland Art Museum. At 8:15 a.m., arrive at the Poland Seminary High School parking lot. Be prompt, they must stay on schedule. Cars can be left in the PSHS parking lot. At 8:30 a.m. the bus will leave for Cleveland. At 10 a.m. the bus will arrive at the Western Reserve Historical Society. You will be free to visit exhibits on your own. At 12 p.m. you will board the bus for short trip to Cleveland Art Museum. From 12:15-1:15 p.m. you can have lunch on your own at the museum cafe or restaurant. At 1:15 p.m. you will begin the tour of museum filled with wonderful exhibits. At 4 p.m., you will leave for home.

Teen Read Week will feature author Barry Lyga

Join the Poland library on Oct. 18 at 6:30 p.m. for a special presentation by Barry Lyga, author of “After the Red Rain” and the “I Hunt Killers” series. This event is for teens.

Friends of the Poland Library meeting

Friends of the Poland Library will have their first meeting of the autumn season at 10 a.m. on Oct. 4. Kim Kenny will present a program “Sweet Stuff,” the story of chocolate. The business meeting will follow. The Friends will host a potluck luncheon immediately following the business meeting. Members are asked to bring a salad, fruit dish or casserole with a spoon. Officers will bring dessert. The public is invited to attend and to stay for lunch. Donations of books, magazines, CDs and DVDs for the Friends of the Library book cart may be brought to all the meetings. Yearly dues are $10 and new members are welcome. Since this is a luncheon event, there will not be refreshments before the meeting.

FAFSA workshop

Join on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. at the PSHS auditorium to learn about earlier access to the FAFSA, as well as earlier deadlines for priority consideration at major schools. Attendance is strongly recommended, even if you have filed the FAFSA before. Junior and senior parents are welcome and the focus will be on the seniors getting ready to file the FAFSA now. Playtime at your library

Prepare for kindergarten through play. You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten at the Poland library at 6 p.m. on Oct. 27. Activities will vary at each program. This is for ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Poland library at 10 a.m. on every Wednesday in October. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s

Join the Poland library every Thursday in October at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Fun time for 4’s and 5’s

Join the Poland library on Oct. 11 at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes and finger plays, and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Halloween howls

Join the Poland library on Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. for some spooky stories, games and more fun. Snacks will be provided. This event is for grades K-4. Children may attend in costume.

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Poland library on Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This will be for children ages 6 and up.

Listen and Lego

Listen to a story and then have fun building with Legos at the Poland library on Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. Legos will be provided. This is for ages 4-7.

Read to Roxie

Relax and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International, at the Poland library on Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This is for grades 1-4.

Trim a tree for October

Decorate an ornament the our all-seasons tree at the Poland library during library hours in October.

3-D printing: an introduction

What is 3-D Printing? How does it work, and why is this technology becoming so popular? Find out in this class at the Poland library on Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. No experience is necessary and no computer skills are required. See a demonstration of loading a 3-D print job and watch the printer in action. This is for teens and adults.

Halloween painting party

Create your very own Halloween painting as you follow along step-by-step with a presenter at the Poland library on Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. for grades K-4 and Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. for grades 5-12. Zombie Halloween dance party

Dress up as one of the walking dead or other creepy character and join the Poland library for food and fun with DJ-style music on Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes in an array of categories. This is for grades 6 and up.

The eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest

Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. Local libraries are sponsoring the eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. The format of the writing contest this year is a six word memoir. A Six-Word Memoir Æ is the story of your life — some part of it or all of it — told in exactly six words. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. Eligibility: All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County. Contest runs from Oct. 1-31.

Color your world

Join the Poland library on Oct. 12 at 7-8:30 p.m. for a relaxing evening of adult coloring. Coloring sheets and materials will be provided, or you’re welcome to bring your own. Colorful light refreshments will be served.

Painting party for adults

Paint your own 16 inch by 20 inch autumn canvas for your home or for that special gift at the Poland library on Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. No experience is necessary. All supplies and instruction provided. There will be a $5 fee. Registration is required and space is limited.

Book-A-Librarian

Book-a-Librarian sessions are tailored to meet the specific needs of the individual. Annual pasta dinner fundraiser to be Oct. 2

Poland Seminary High School, located at 3199 Dobbins Road, will be the location of the annual Band Pasta Dinner on Oct. 2 from 12-6 p.m. Tickets are available from any marching band member or at the door. Tickets cost $8 for adults and $6 for children ages 12 and under. Takeout orders are available. There will be a Poland Wind Ensemble Fall Pops Concert at 6 p.m. in the auditorium at no additional charge. The pasta dinner is sponsored by Poland Giant Eagle, Cerni Motors and DeNiro Foods. America’s Schoolmaster exhibit

The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
