Indiana: Freshman running back Kiante Enis was kicked off the team Thursday, less than 24 hours after being charged with two counts of felony child molestation for allegedly having an improper relationship with a child under 13.
The athletic department issued a one-sentence statement, announcing the dismissal would take effect immediately.
The Randolph County Sheriff’s Department said the charges were filed Wednesday. Each is punishable by up to 16 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
In a release, the sheriff’s department said it was investigating a report that Enis and a child under the age of 13 had a relationship. The department said Enis admitted to at least two consensual sexual encounters. Enis was booked into county jail and was being held Thursday afternoon on a $20,000 bond. Jail records did not list an attorney for him.
Doug Fritz, the Randolph County chief deputy sheriff, told The (Muncie) Star Press the alleged victim was a girl. He said she and Enis had been “friends within the community.”
Enis rushed for 7,014 and 98 touchdowns at Winchester Community High School and originally committed to playing at Michigan before changing his mind and staying in state.
He finished fifth in the IndyStar Mr. Football Award voting and was selected as the Mr. Football position winner as the state’s best running back. The (Portland) Commercial Review reported Enis is the nephew of former Penn State and Chicago Bears running back Curtis Enis.
Auburn: An attorney for a woman accusing former Auburn tight end Landon Rice of rape has issued a series of text message exchanges he says are between his client and Rice.
Florida attorney Jeff Herman released the messages to The Associated Press Thursday after Rice’s attorneys issued a statement saying the allegations are false. Rice’s attorneys have filed motions seeking either a dismissal or a weeklong continuance to a hearing scheduled for Oct. 4 regarding a temporary protective order issued against Rice. He hasn’t been charged.
The AP does not name alleged victims in sexual assault cases.
The alleged rape occurred between 11 p.m. on April 12 and 6 a.m. April 13. The 19-year-old Auburn student sent Rice a text less than a week later, and reported it to police on July 27.
“I’m saying this because I want you to know that what you did was wrong,” the woman’s April 18 message said in part. “Whether it was 5 seconds or it was 20 minutes, it was still wrong.”
In the released documents, Rice’s responded: “Yes I knew it was wrong and I am sorry. There is nothing I can do to make it right. I am really sorry. I should have never put you in that position, I was just in the moment. That is not the person kind of person I am. (Accuser’s name) I am really sorry.”
The last texts are from June when Rice texted her and the woman responded by telling him not to contact her again.
Herman said the woman “felt that it was important to not be silenced” and released the text messages after defense attorneys said the accusations were false.
“I think she’s a brave young woman and really wanted to maintain her privacy throughout this whole thing and just let the process run its course,” Herman said.
Syracuse: A former Syracuse University football player accused of attacking two former teammates at a spring barbecue has been arrested for trespassing on campus.
The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports that Naesean Howard, who was dismissed from the football team in 2014, was arrested by Syracuse University’s public safety department on Wednesday.
Onondaga County Judge Anthony Aloi had issued a protective order earlier in the day for current defensive backs Chauncey Scissum and Corey Winfield after the 20-year-old Howard had been frequently spotted near the football complex.
Howard is facing assault charges stemming from an incident in which he is accused of stabbing Winfield and Scissum at the barbecue in April.
