The Canfield Historical Society will present Canfield Memory Walk: A Step Back in Time Sept. 24 and Oct. 8. The living history Memory Walk will guide visitors through Canfield’s past, from early pioneer days to the present era.

The one-hour guided walking tour will consist of a dozen sites at which Canfield business professionals and citizens will portray historical persons such as Jacob Barnes, Elisha Whittlesey, Civil War veterans, German immigrants and more.

“We will have many different characters from Canfield history stationed at the sites. For example, we will have a 1920s car dealer, a 1960s race car driver, a Civil War veteran, a linotype operator at the newspaper shop and a 1970s musician. We are going to have characters from all different eras, not just the old history of the 20s and 40s,” said Suzie McCabe, Canfield Historical Society president.

The last stop on the Memory Walk will be a reenactment of the 1921 bank robbery.

“For the last stop, we are going to reenact the 1921 bank robbery. We will have the robbers running out of the bank in their pin stripe suits with the money and the tellers will be running after them. The robbers will jump into their ‘old fashioned’ car and speed away,” McCabe said.

McCabe said the Mahoning Dispatch was an invaluable resource when researching the robbery.

“The Mahoning Dispatch was an invaluable resource for us. We used the article about the bank robbery that ran in the Dispatch to piece together the reenactment. All that we know about the robbery came from the Dispatch. We also found an article about the 1930s fire and we will have news boys on the corner at the green handing out ‘newspapers’ highlighting the fire,” McCabe said.

The Memory Walk is a fundraiser for the Canfield Historical Society, and according to McCabe, the money raised has been earmarked for improvements to the Mahoning Dispatch building.

“The money raised from the walk will be used to restore the fa ßade on the Mahoning Dispatch. We intend to preserve it and restore it to the best of our ability,” McCabe said.

Sponsors of the event include Boak and Sons, Canfield Fair Board, Delfs, Fairway Ford, Farmers National Bank, George Roman Auctioneers, Greier Ag Center, Home Savings and Loan, Lane Family Funeral Homes, Olfield Graphics, Piccadilly Parlour, Pipers Printing, Rotary Club of Canfield, Town Crier, Village Green Associates and Youngstown Vindicator.

This is the first year for the Memory walk, but McCabe said the Canfield Historical Society hopes to make it an annual event.

“We discovered so many exciting historical events while researching for the Memory Walk that we hope to make this an annual event with different characters each year,” McCabe said.

To end the evening, attendees will have dinner at Piccadilly Parlour.

The cost of the Memory Walk is $25 per individual and $40 per couple. Tour times are 5 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 6:15 p.m.
