K of C to host pancake breakfast
Immaculate Heart of Mary Knights of Columbus 3930 will be sponsoring a pancake and sausage breakfast on Oct. 2 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the parish center, located at 4500 Norquest Blvd. in Austintown. The menu consists of pancakes, sausage and beverages. The cost for adults is $5 and it will be $3 for children 12 and under.
MCCTC flower shop opens
The student-run flower shop at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will open for its fall open house, beginning on Sept. 16 and running throughout the month of October.
A variety of fall silk floral arrangements and wreaths will be available. Fall mums are also available for sale and can be dressed for a gift or planted outside.
The shop will be decorated and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. during this time. Extended hours are available upon request.
Choose from a selection of pre-made items or purchase materials elsewhere and the students can create a beautiful piece for you. Fresh arrangements for any occasion can be made to order with a few days notice. Also they are taking orders for homecoming corsages.
GA to meet
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
Teen Read Week to feature author Barry Lyga
Join the Austintown library on Oct. 18 at 9 a.m. for a special presentation by Barry Lyga, author of “After the Red Rain” and the “I Hunt Killers” series. This event is for teens.
East Class of 1962 to have fall dinner
East High School Class of 1962 classmates will have their fall dinner at 6 p.m. on Oct. 22 at Donavito’s in Struthers.
Pre-kindergarten story time
This program is for ages 4- and 5-years to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. You will use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten. It will take place at the Austintown library at 11:30 a.m. on every Wednesday in October.
Playtime at your library
Prepare for kindergarten through play. You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten at the Austintown library at 10 a.m. on Oct. 20. Activities will vary at each program. This is for ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment, including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Austintown library at 10 a.m. on every Tuesday in October. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s
Join the Austintown library every Wednesday in October at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Gotta move story time
This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Austintown library on Oct. 6, 13 and 27 at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
Grab and go craft
Make a craft to take home at the Austintown library during library hours in October. This is for children of all ages.
Guess the scary book
Can you guess the horror book title from cut up pages in a jar? One winner will be chosen at random from the correct entries at the Austintown library during library hours on Saturdays in October. This event is for adults.
It’s the great fall harvest, Charlie Brown
Get into the fall and Halloween spirit at the Austintown library on Oct. 1 at 11:30 a.m. Enjoy all things “fall” with games, activities, craft and a snack. You’ll share the “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” storybook app. This event is for children of all ages.
Lego my library
Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Austintown library on Oct.5 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This will be for children, ages 6 and up.
Read to Reese
Come and read to Reese, a therapy dog from Pet Partners, at the Austintown library on Oct. 8 at 11 a.m. Bring your own book, or the librarians will find one for you, and read to a furry friend. Learn to use one of the prominent tools in scheduling at the Austintown library on Oct. 10 at 6:30 p.m. Learn the basics of using Google Calendar, including adding events, linking documents, adding and sharing calendars, printing calendars, sending/accepting/declining invitations and color coding. Eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest begins Oct. 1
Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member who was lost to cancer. Local libraries are sponsoring the eighth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. The format of the writing contest this year is a six word memoir. A Six-Word Memoir Æ is the story of your life — some part of it or all of it — told in exactly six words. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. Eligibility: All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County. Contest runs from Oct. 1-31.
Bow-Wow-Ween
Legacy Dog Rescue will sponsor Bow-Wow-Ween, a community Halloween event from 12-3 p.m. on Oct. 8 at Austintown Township Park, Pogany Pavilion, located at 6000 Kirk Road. To participate, dogs must be leashed at all times, up to date on vaccinations and handled by an adult. Among the features will be pet/child photos, refreshments, basket auction, games and goodies. For a $5 donation, a pet or child can be entered in all costume contests. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes in a number of categories. Proceeds will help Legacy Dog Rescue, a local nonprofit group, save dogs that have been abandoned, abused or neglected, and place them into loving homes. Las Vegas night
Austintown American Legion Post 301, located at 3652 Oakwood Avenue in Austintown, will host a Las Vegas Night and Basket Raffle on Oct. 1 starting at 7 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door at $5 per person.
Saxon flea market
The Saxon Club will host its Flea Market every Tuesday through October (weather permitting). The Flea Maket starts at 8 a.m. (vendors can set up early) and ends at 2 p.m. Large spaces are provided for $5 per space. A variety of items will be available such as household goods, books, tools and collectables. Refreshments are available. The Saxon Club is located at 710 S. Meridian Road, on the west side of Youngstown.
America’s Schoolmaster exhibit
The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
