End-of-summer bash planned for dog-rescue group

Staff report

BOARDMAN

Every Dog Matters.

That’s the mantra, and the name, of a new foster-based dog-rescue organization.

After officially forming in July, the group is working to raise money that will pay for expenses such as veterinary care, food, heartworm and flea treatments, training and anything else rescued dogs need while staying in foster homes.

“There are so many dogs in this area with no homes; an owner dumps them, whatever the case may be,” said president Shirley Persinger of Boardman. “I’ve been involved with rescue for quite a few years now, and I just thought I needed to start my own because ... it’s really needed in this area.”

The group will host an “End of Summer Bash” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Cobblestone Corner, a business at 6234 Market St.

The event is open to people and pets (as long as they get along with other pets), and will feature face-painting, a photo booth, balloon artist and a decorate-your-own cupcake station.

All proceeds from donations, concessions and T-shirt sales will help pay for foster-related expenses.

The group also is collecting new and gently used shoes for a fundraising challenge that could win a $1,000 donation for Every Dog Matters. The organization through which they are doing the challenge will then donate the shoes to people in need.

Donations can be made until Oct. 31 at these drop-off locations: Cobblestone Corners, Pet Lodge USA of Boardman and One Hot Cookie locations in Canfield and Niles. Pickup also can be arranged.
