Pagenaud wins IRL title
SONOMA, CALIF.
Simon Pagenaud gave Roger Penske an IndyCar championship to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the one of the most storied organization in motorsports.
The Frenchman won his first career IndyCar title in his sophomore season driving for Penske. He did it in dominating fashion by winning the season finale Sunday at Sonoma Raceway, where he needed only a smooth finish to put a wrap on this breakthrough season.
Pagenaud entered the weekend 43 points ahead of teammate Will Power as the Penske drivers were the only two mathematically eligible to win the championship. But Pagenaud won the pole to earn another point, led the most laps and won a race that was worth double points in the standings.
It was a moot point, though: Power had mechanical issues 38 laps into the race that sealed the outcome.
Team North America upsets Finland
TORONTO
Jack Eichel, Johnny Gaudreau, Jonathan Drouin and Nathan MacKinnon scored, Matt Murray made 24 saves and Team North America skated circles around Finland on the way to a 4-1 victory Sunday night at the World Cup of Hockey.
Captain Connor McDavid and the group of 23-and-under Americans and Canadians put on an unbelievable show of speed and skill in their first World Cup game, making good on the pre-tournament buzz. North America made it a torturous night for Finland, which had nine players back from the bronze-medal team in the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
Finnish goaltender Pekka Rinne was often brilliant in stopping 39 of the 43 shots he faced but couldn’t do much about the domination going on in front of him. Valtteri Filppula scored Finland’s only goal late in the third period after the result was decided.
