Man in underpants rams police car
BATON ROUGE, La.
Baton Rouge police say a man wearing only red underpants attacked officers with “superhuman strength,” got into a patrol car and tried to run over officers and rammed a mobile home off its blocks.
WBRZ-TV reported that according to an arrest report, 35-year-old Jeremy Wayne Saylor punched a beach-ball-sized dent in the car’s windshield, and shook officers off and got into the car despite four shocks from a stun gun.
Police spokesman L’Jean McKneely told The Advocate that relatives had called police about 4:30 p.m. Saturday, saying Saylor was “tearing things up” after smoking synthetic marijuana called mojo. He was arrested on charges of attempted murder of a police officer, resisting police, felony auto theft and damage to property.
Toxic algae abounds
OAKLAND, CALIF.
Toxic algae has shown up in more than 40 state lakes and waterways from Los Angeles to the northern reaches of California, the highest count in state history.
Water agencies have been caught off guard by the growing extent of the algae, which is triggering health warnings, the closing of swim areas and a reduction in park visitors and revenues, the East Bay Times reported Sunday.
The cyanobacterium, which occurs naturally, can cause gastrointestinal problems and allergic reactions in people and sickness and death among pets and wildlife. The cyanobacterium has blossomed during the state’s drought.
US, Japan, S. Korea condemn nuke test
NEW YORK
The United States, Japan and South Korea on Sunday roundly condemned North Korea’s recent nuclear test and called for tough new measures to further isolate the communist state.
Meeting on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and the Japanese and South Korean foreign ministers said the North Korean test earlier this month would not go unanswered.
The test was North Korea’s fifth and, along with recent ballistic missile launches, has been widely criticized as destabilizing to regional and international security.
Kerry said the U.S. remained deeply committed to its mutual defense obligations with Japan and South Korea and would not shirk in “rolling back the provocative, reckless behavior of” North Korea.
