Sewage dump affects river in Miss., La.
BROOKHAVEN, Miss.
A levee breach at a wastewater treatment plant in Brookhaven, Miss., has dumped six million gallons of diluted sewage into the Bogue Chitto river. That prompted water quality warnings along that river, which is popular for recreational use, from southwest Mississippi into southeast Louisiana.
The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality says the city has made repairs since Friday’s breach, ending the flow of sewage, which was diluted by storm water. But the department warned against swimming, wading or eating fish from the Bogue Chitto until further notice.
Louisiana’s departments of Health and Environmental Quality issued a similar warning Saturday.
Dr. Jimmy Guidry, Louisiana’s state Health Officer, said the sewage release can result in elevated levels of harmful bacteria that can cause diarrhea, sore throats, stomach cramps or vomiting.

Suspected militants attack Indian army base in Kashmir
SRINAGAR, India
Officials say suspected rebels in Indian-controlled Kashmir have attacked a major army camp close to the highly militarized line of control dividing the disputed Himalayan region between India and Pakistan.
A police officer says an unspecified number of militants sneaked into the army camp in Uri town before dawn today and used guns and grenades to target the soldiers.
A military officer says soldiers returned fire and a gunbattle was ongoing.
Both the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak to media, did not immediately specify any casualties.
Uri, a town west of Indian Kashmir’s main city of Srinagar, houses the Indian army’s brigade headquarters in the region along the de-facto border.
