SATURDAY’S BIG TEN RESULTS

No. 12 Michigan St. 36, No. 18 Notre Dame 28

SOUTH BEND, IND.

Tyler O’Connor threw for two touchdowns, Gerald Holmes ran for two more, including a 73-yard score, and Michigan State took advantage of mistakes by Notre Dame and held on for a victory. The Spartans (2-0) turned what had been a close game at halftime into a 29-point lead with three third-quarter touchdowns. But Notre Dame made it close as DeShone Kizer threw for two touchdowns and ran for another and the Irish (1-2) cut the lead to 36-28 with 6:02 left on a 12-yard touchdown pass to tight end Durham Smythe.

No. 4 Michigan 45, Colorado 28

ANN ARBOR, MICH.

De’Veon Smith gave Michigan the lead with a 42-yard run early in the third quarter and the No. 4 Wolverines pulled away to beat Colorado. The Wolverines (3-0) were behind 21-7 in the first quarter and by four points in the opening minute of the second half. The Buffaloes (2-1) got to midfield on the final possession, but they were more than a Hail Mary away by the end of the matchup.

No. 9 Wisconsin 23, Georgia State 17

MADISON, WIS.

Backup quarterback Alex Hornibrook led Wisconsin to three scoring drives in the second half, helping the sluggish Badgers avert an embarrassing upset with a win on over Georgia State. Hornibrook took over for Bart Houston late in the third quarter with Wisconsin stuck in an offensive malaise. The freshman finished 8 of 12 for 122 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Penniston with 7:25 left to give the Badgers the lead for good.

Nebraska 35, No. 22 Oregon 32

LINCOLN, NEB.

Tommy Armstrong Jr.’s legs were so cramped up that when Nebraska’s defense was on the field he would drink pickle juice, Gatorade, water and anything else he could find on the sideline. He even was given fluids intravenously early in the fourth quarter. It turned out he had one more run left in him. With legs that he said felt like Jello, Armstrong took off on a quarterback draw, made two tacklers miss and scored a 34-yard touchdown with 2:29 left, lifting Nebraska to a victory over Oregon.

Penn State 34, Temple 27

STATE COLLEGE, PA.

Trace McSorley completed 18 of 24 passes for 287 yards with one touchdown and an interception and rushed for another score to lead Penn State to a win against Temple. A year after the Nittany Lions (2-1) were embarrassed in a season-opening loss to the Owls, Penn State scored on three of its first five drives to take a 21-10 halftime lead.

Rutgers 37, New Mexico 28

PISCATAWAY, N.J.

Wide receiver Janarion Grant threw for a touchdown and had a go-ahead 69 yard punt return for another score as Rutgers rallied from an early 21-point deficit and defeated New Mexico.

Northwestern 24, Duke 13

EVANSTON, ILL.

Clayton Thorson threw for 320 yards and three touchdowns, Justin Jackson rushed for 94 yards, and Northwestern defeated Duke. After being held to 7 points by Illinois State last week, Northwestern (1-2) scored on the game’s opening drive.

Western Michigan 34, Illinois 10

CHAMPAIGN, ILL.

Western Michigan came to Illinois Saturday as three-point favorites to pick up its second win in three weeks over a Big Ten team. Maybe that line should have been a little bigger. The Broncos (3-0) knocked off Illinois 34-10, two weeks after beating Northwestern on the road. Western Michigan looked the part of a Big Ten team for much of the game, pushing the Illini (1-2) around the field.

Maryland 30, UCF 24 OT

ORLANDO, FLA.

Maryland freshman quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome replaced starter Perry Hills and on his only play of the game raced 24 yards for the game-winning score in a double-overtime win for the Terrapins over UCF. Freshman quarterback McKenzie Milton, making his first career start, committed his sixth fumble of the night and fourth turnover to begin the second overtime, setting the stage for Pigrome’s heroics.
