State unemployment rate down slightly

The state’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate in August 2016 dropped slightly to 4.7 percent from 4.8 percent in July 2016.

Over the month, Ohio’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment dropped 2,000 over the month from a revised 5,505,400 in July to 5,503,400 in August 2016.

The number of unemployed workers dropped 6,000 month over month to 272,000, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

The civilian labor force – the sum of the employed and the unemployed – dropped from 5,787,000 in July 2016 to 5,763,000 in August 2016

The goods-producing industry added 2,600 jobs during the month – 2,100 in construction, 400 in manufacturing and 100 in mining and logging. The leisure and hospitality industry added 2,600 jobs; financial activities added 1,600; information added 100; local government added 3,100; and the federal government added 200 jobs.

The private sector reported a loss of 7,600 jobs during the month; professional and business services lost 5,500 jobs; trade, transportation and utilities lost 2,400 jobs; other services also lost 2,400 jobs; educational and health services lost 1,600 jobs; and state government lost 300 jobs.

The U.S. seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for August was 4.9 percent, unchanged from July.

The Mahoning Valley’s nonseasonally adjusted unemployment rates will be released Tuesday.
