Oakland scores late in win over Penguins

Youngstown

Oakland scored three goals with under 15 minutes left in the match to defeat the Youngstown State women’s soccer team, 3-0, in the Horizon League opener for both teams on Friday night at Farmers National Bank Field.

After more than 75 minutes of a scoreless stalemate, Oakland’s Sydnye Gagner scored twice within 42 seconds to give the Golden Grizzlies (4-4-1, 1-0-0) a 2-0 lead.

On the first goal Cecilie Dokka centered a long pass from the right side and found Gagner open on the left side of the goal for an open shot at the 76:35 mark.

The Penguins (2-5-1., 0-1-0) nearly tied the match seconds later when Alison Green broke free and slid a shot past Oakland goalkeeper Alison Holland. Right before the ball crossed the goalline an Oakland defender cleared it away.

On the next trip down into YSU territory, Gagner scored again on a nearly identical pass from Dokka at the 77:17 mark.

Lauren Bos closed out the scoring with a goal at the 88:50 mark.

Harding soccer team edges Boardman

Dalonte Williamson and Michael Jordan scored for the Warren Harding boys soccer team in Thursday’s 2-1 victory.

Dominic Van Winkle and Reed Stanyard earned assists while goalkeeper Dimitri Callow made five saves.

For the Spartans, Robb Lewis scored the goal and David Giancola made five saves.

YSU’s Sullivan wins Buffalo Stampede

Buffalo, N.Y.

Youngstown State junior Ryan Sullivan ran an impressive time of 24:36.5 to win the Buffalo Stampede Cross Country Invitational on Friday. Sullivan won the event by nearly 10 seconds in his 2016 debut.

Sullivan posted a time of 24:36.5 average a 4:58 per mile pace in the 8K race. He finished just under 10 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Connecticut’s Michael McGonnigle (24:46.3).

His time was the second fastest 8K performance in YSU cross country history just four seconds off the mark set in 1998 by Matt Folk (24:32). Sullivan’s previous career-best time in the event was 24:48 which occurred at last year’s Horizon League meet.

Alan Burns was the next best YSU finisher posting a time of 25:34.5 to place 21st, freshman Tristan Dahman clocked a time of 25:37.9 to finish 23rd, junior Dylan Dombi was 31st with a 25:45.6, James Nedrich placed 34th with a 25:49.2, Ethan Wilson 36th with a 25:51.5.

In the team standings, UConn took first place with a score of 38, while YSU was fifth with a 104.

For the women, McKinsie Klim had a top time of 22:51.7 to finish in 10th place and Michelle Klim was close behind placing 19th with a time of 22:51.7.

In the team standings, Duquesne finished first with a score of 39 while the Guins placed fifth at 113.

The Penguins are next in action on Sept. 30 at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational.
