GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Howland 25-25-25, Lakeside 19-15-18

HOWLAND

Tigers senior hitter Cassie Murcko collected 22 kills, including the 1,000th of her Howland career in a sweep of the Dragons. Murcko never thought she would reach that milestone when she first took the court for Howland.

“No, I really didn’t,” she said.

Murcko was quick to credit her teammates for their assistance in reaching the personal milestone.

“Volleyball is not a one-person sport,” she said. “An entire team playing together is what it takes to be successful.”

Howland coach Amanda Lingenfelter credits Murcko’s success to a year-round approach to volleyball.

“She’s got a lot of experience,” Lingenfelter said. “This is her fourth year with the varsity and she spends the winter and spring traveling to play club ball at a high level. Plus she plays a lot of beach volleyball. She plays pretty much year-round and doesn’t take much time off.”

Faith Grant added 15 points, including seven aces, and 12 kills for Howland (7-5), while Kathryn Summerfield had 31 assists and Danni Harigan had nine digs.

Murcko also had four blocks. She wants to play college volleyball and has several campus visits planned, but isn’t sure where she wants to play.

But Murcko is sure about one thing.

“I want to win a championship with my team,” she said. “We’re very close and there’s no drama. I’d like to be with all my friends because that makes winning fun.”
